Buying Dinghy w\out title

I?m in the process of buying a 1993 dinghy & motor from this guy that doesn?t have the title; he claims he?s the original owner but just never got a title for it.

How much of a PITA is it to get a title when you buy a boat that doesn?t have one?.in Florida.

Check with the Florida DMV, but I know in PA that you only need to have a boat titled if it is;

* Powered by an inboard motor, including personal watercraft, 1997 model year or newer.

* Powered by an outboard motor, 14 feet or longer, 1997 model year or newer.

* Currently titled in Pennsylvania.

* Currently titled in another state when Pennsylvania becomes the state of primary use.

it is a royal PITA in Florida, what kind of dingy, you can register homemade is the only way if he will not get a title. i consider a boat stolen without title. but i have bought many, and titled them homemade, but that makes me a criminal in the eyes to the state.

Make sure you get a detailed bill of sale.

How long has FL required titles for boats?

In TX, the requirement started in 1994 and includs motors too. So as you can guess, there are thousands of boats in Texas that have changed owners many times prior to 1994. There are many boats just sitting around that could be salvaged.

since the 70's. boat theft in Florida, was one of the reasons for the national trend to register and title boats, and have HIN's there was no way to trace them.
