DO NOT go in swinging, that is the worst thing you can do, be nice as nice as possible.

If you go in swinging they will tell you to go get bent, and point out that the boat had no warrranty, if you play nice maybe they will fix it, you didn't catch it, why would they have, that isn't something you normally check for.

And There can't be big problems, no warranty means once you buy it it is yours period, no court or lawyer in the world can get around that, if the engine had fallen out the bottom of the boat they still aren't under any obligation to fix anything.

Be nice and you have a chance, go in swinging and you are done.

+1

There was no warrenty but if they dont do something about it there are going to be big problems.

You paid less than $3000 for a 16 year old USED piece of machinery. I'm thinking, as painful as it is, that you have some unrealistic expectations about who is responsible for what.

The best I would hope for would be some help with the repairs. The dealer has every right to tell you to get lost, but it's not good business. I'm sure he'll want you to keep spending money with him. I second the 'be nice' scenario.

hate to hear you have problems it's real sad that there are shady people in this world but we can always hope that they didn't know and will have enough honor to repair it for you or at least split the cost i didn't use a surveyor when i bought mine but it might have been a good idea in this case it's funny how hindsight is always 20-20 good luck and go with kindness and sincerity it will get you a lot further

It's thats the only issue consider yourself lucky, a $3000 15yr old boat.
Something like a a few thou. or .050 whatever could have easily gone undetected, especially if the boat had been moored.

Be nice and try to negotiate something in the middle. You pay for the actual cost of the parts and they install. No warranty means no warranty. Remember that this was a consignment at the dealer and sold by a party. Your issue is with the private seller, not the marina.

Re: buying it... EDIT: I bought it EDIT AGAIN: HUGE PROBLEMS!!!!

Last night I was so mad I think there was smoke pouring out of my ears. Its a good thing I didnt get a hold of anyone at the marina because I needed time to cool off. You're right, the only way they're going to do anything for me is by being nice. I didnt notice any vibration.

A rebuilt lower unit is 900 dollars.

If there wasn't any vibration I can see how that could have been missed, Sorry to hear about the ordeal, Hopefully you can get it resolved, I had to replace the lower on mine( my own fault) and it was money that I could have used for something else, How is the rest of the boat, are you at least happy with that???

I just got off the phone with the guy that sold it (i was nice). Of course they want me to bring it in which is REALLY a pain in the *** for me. I was trying to get him to commit to something over the phone and he wouldn't.

I agree. He shouldn't go in "swinging" but i don't know about the whole engine falling out thing. ;) Lets just hope that does NOT happen or "some body is going to get a hurt real bad..." :p

You can get new, not rebuilt, lower units right here on iboats for less than that. I believe that they are from SEI (?), and they have a 3 year no-fault warranty.

I just looked...easy to find!

At least they told you to bring it in for them to look at..Thats a good sign.
I doubt they knew it was bent.
Maybe they will work with you on the repair to just keep you a happy customer.

Take the prop shaft out and straighten it or have it straightened. That little bit isn't going to affect the strength of the shaft. Doesn't take anything but a couple of v-blocks, a press, and a dial indicator. I must have straightened a couple of dozen for people around here and have never had any problems at all with them. Couple of them have been over 1/2" out when we started.

Re: buying it... EDIT: I bought it EDIT AGAIN: HUGE PROBLEMS!!!!

A rebuilt lower unit won't usually include replacing the prop drive shaft (the cost of the part anyway). I bent mine last year, but after the incident where it happened, there was no vibration or anything to indicate the problem while in use for the rest of that weekend, so for a while I thought I just hit a rock and that's it. We didn't notice it until winterizing and you could clearly see the drive shaft moving as it turns.

Dealers, mechanics, or anyone really won't commit to anything over the phone. I'm in the service industry and I won't commit to things over the phone either until I'm fully involved in the situation and know what's going on.

I think you're just getting your leg rebuild out of the way early. I know it sucks, but in the long run this will have been a positive experience and you will have learned something. If you bought a boat for $3k and don't have any more way to pay for ongoing costs and maintenance, then I'd say you overbought.

Re: buying it... EDIT: I bought it EDIT AGAIN: HUGE PROBLEMS!!!!

I must have missed what you actually did when you checked it out. I've never had a bent prop shaft before - is it not evident when you run the boat/engine on the water? I would think that running it would be a normal part of a used boat transaction.

Also, is it something that would be noticed by the original owner and/or consignment seller?

ANyway, good luck, but every used boat Iv'e bought is "buyer beware". I've had problems that crop up after purchase but they were either ones I should have noticed (therefore my own fault no matter how much I wish it weren't) or just happened later and the original owner couldn't have predicted.

What a downer! :(

What kinds of trauma can bend a propeller shaft anyway, and what might this do to the rest of the drive and boat? JS... Good Luck.
