BUYING New Exhaust Questions ?????

So its time to replace my exhaust. What are some on the differences between OEM and some of the aftermarket. Aftermarket has powder coated inside and out, or stainless, and even aluminum. I don't want to break the bank, but also don't want to waste the money.

What are you using and like?

I mostly run the intercoastal around the Va Bch area, mostly brackish to fresh.

Ok so I'll buy cast. What makes the OEM last longer than aftermarket. What has everyone had experience with?

Alloy type and quality of that alloy. Cast iron, is not just cast iron, one size fits all. There are many different alloys of the metal called "Cast Iron"

That pretty much eliminates everything but cast iron. (Alum., stainless can't tolerate salt) The after market manifolds get very mixed reviews with many saying they simply don't last. (They do not last as long as OEM for certain.)

So it comes down to buy cheap and replace more often or buy OEM and get more life from them.

I might add the caveat / aside that some of the higher end performance manifold / riser combos made by imco, stainless marine and a couple of others are truly designed to last in salt water under harsh conditions (the aluminum maniflold is hard anodized and then powdercoated or impregnated / coated otherwise, the riser is stainless steel) Stainles marine and imco in particular have an outstanding reputation for quality and have excellent lifetimes in salt water. They're also designed so that if over some period of years the manifold corrodes and is breached, the outside walls are significantly thinner than the inside so it'll start to leak on the outside long before putting any water in the engine. The seal design between manifold and riser are also much better than oem designs.


Depending on specifics, you're talking 1500 - 3000 for an exhaust system / manifold and riser combo that would replace your current manifold and riser...

There are also some fully stainless manifolds out there, but I don't know who's currently manufacturing or selling them right now...
