Buying/selling vehicles

I attempted to buy a vehicle from an individual and ended up walking away because we couldn't come to terms (price wasn't an issue). He wanted me to give him a check (cashiers check was the same - he didn't trust either), he would give me a handwritten receipt for it, then he would send it through, and if it cleared, he would deliver the vehicle. I immediately said no. I offered to meet him at a mutually agreeable Bank and the bank could verify the funds and he could hand me the bill of sale and title. He didn't like this because "I might run to another bank and withdraw my money before the check actually cleared. Actually, that's what he was worried about all the way around. He was afraid of a cashiers check too, even if I bought it at the bank of his choice and handed it to him on the spot after the bank verified they would get their money.... He was once again worried that I would go take the money out before the check cleared....

Needless to say, this deal ended up smelling really bad and we ended up walking away from the and we're not going to try it again with this individual. I didn't really smell a scam, just paranoia. I couldn't find any reasonable way to make the deal work. He's sure that others would deal this way... And that no dealer would take a personal OR cashiers check and let you have the vehicle before it cleared -news to me, I bought my last 3 vehicles just liek that, gave teh dealera check, they may or may not verify it with the bank as they wished, I left with my vehicle and teh title came in the mail a couple weeks later...

I refuse to give a check like that. When it is cashed, it's virtually untraceable after that. I don't think his stance is reasonable. There was another snag to the deal that really finished it off, but it is irrelevant to this discussion.

After the above, I don't want to do business with this individual, so my question is for future knowledge.

For those that buy/sell this way often, how do you handle funds transfer?

I do this allot.

1. Cashiers check is fine-When Cleared. Or, a mutual bank.

2. Money order on a well known issuer.

3. Cash is KING!

I've NEVER had an issue with either.

I get know buyers. You can tell the dirtbags from the legit. ones.

Re: Buying/selling vehicles

Thanks, DJ, the amount is a few thousand and I really don't want that much cash in my pocket when dealing with someone I only have the first name of when meeting in an unfamiliar area. We even discussed it a bit and he didn't want cash.

He was very concerned that I would beat ANY check to the bank and pull the funds so it bounced.... Cashiers checks don't work that way last time I used one. They are on the Bank, not me.

I offered to meet him at a bank and conduct the transaction there so there would be no question, but he was still worried about the above, offered to go to the post office and buy a stack of money orders. he refused that as well ???

Even without the money issue, my gut was telling me to walk away during the conversation about money and my wife agreed that this deal didn't feel right.

Jason,

Most "legit" buyers/sellers will agree to your terms (meet at A bank, etc.) or you ARE ON YOUR OWN. Plus, banks offer notary services.

Carrying cash does not bother me.

I do alot of buying/selling too.
I have always gone to a bank with the guy and got the cash from the teller.
Although, sometimes I get a bit nervous walking around with thousands of dollars in my pocket, but I think that is the only way I would do it, cash in hand.

Re: Buying/selling vehicles

I talked a guy into putting a 2003 VW GTI onto a truck from New Jersey to here with only a photo copy of my Passport, Drivers license, a phone call from my credit union, and a few websites with references to me. I didn't have the title, he didn't have the money and we made it work. The way I see this is that's what insurance is for . . . If I run, his car was stolen, right?

I did the same thing as above with a purchase from a Private party in Vegas, I flew up, drove the car home. Sent him the money later. Now both of these cars were not paid for, so they needed me to pay their loan off to get the title . . .

I guess the point is that deals can be made, but people need to work together. Period. This guy is not only unreasonable he is an idiot to try and sell the car himself . . . he doesn't get it.

Isn't this what bank lobbies are for? cash transactions !!

I guess I wouldn't trust this guy to give me a valid title.

Good decision to walk away.

It all boils down to people trusting people. We used to hang horse thieves!

For the most part, we've LOST allot of that.

Go with your gut, on the transactions.

Smart to walk JasonB; smells like a mess. Never had anything like that before and as most my age: I've bought sold my share.

Sounds like he would make sure the check cleared and him too!

He didn't want cash; he didn't want a cashiers check or personal check; he didn't want money orders. Just how did he expect you to pay for it? Is this a riddle?

Re: Buying/selling vehicles

I just went thru this buying my Jeep.

Both sides need to be careful, when not going thru a reputable dealer.

They wanted a certified check from me (understandable) and they had an underlying loan against the vehicle with a local bank. I had my bank make the check out to their bank with their loan number to make sure the underlying was paid off, and I could get a free title.

I still could imagine something going wrong, but nothing "smelled" in the deal, and I went ahead. It is nervewracking, as it was a fair bit of money.

Anyway, everything went fine, just as described. At some level, some level of trust is required. Limit the risk is the key.

Re: Buying/selling vehicles

BoatBouy, he would ony deal if I would give him a check of some form, him give me a receipt for it, then when he deposits/cashes the check and it clears 2-3 days later, he would bring me the vehicle, title, and bill of sale.

Roscoe, there was a question on the validity/clarity of he title.

I may be a bit naieve, but when I worked in a bank years ago, a cashier's check was drawn on the bank so that it had little to do with the individial. You pay the bank and they generate a check to your seller. If the seller wants to verify the check, take your cell phone and call any given branch. Explain that you are being offered a cashier's check on them and ask if it's good. The CSR can pull the record from the magic computer and verify its legit. He was even concerned that If I bought a cashier's check at a bank of mutual choosing in front of him taht he wouldn't accept it because I could run to my bank and move the funds before they cleared.

I would be happy to go to a bank and give him cash, but he didn't want that much cash in pocket. I would gladly take the Cashier's Check to a bank and cash it, then hand him the cash in trade for the keys an the title, but no luck. I'm starting to think that he just wants the deal to work his way so he doesn't have to go to the bank or anything else while the buyer assumes all the risk. He was totally unwilling to put forth *any* trust on his side...but it was ok for mr to trust him with money while he held the vehicle adn title until it the payment cleared.

In any case, the vehicle we were trying to buy is a common one and there are a million of them out there, so we are back on the hunt again. Gut said walk away from this one and find another. It's usually right.

Re: Buying/selling vehicles

I sold a car about a year ago, meet the dude at the DMV exchanged cash for title and walked out the door (as they were telling him "you must have insurance to..."), sounds like he was paranoid, maybe with reason but paranoid! As far as walking around with cash in hand, I once put $35,000 in my shirt pocket and walked out the bank! It was fun watching peoples faces  :D
