Buying the right tach?

Hello guys,
I am getting ready to buy a tach for my 1986 125hp Force. I see them listed as 2,3,4,6, or 8 cylinder engines or 8, 12, 20 pole. What does pole refer to? the amount of coils on the stator? What pitfalls should I be aware of when selecting the proper tach for my engine?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Buying the right tach?

The only one that will work is the 20 pole tach. This refers to the number of poles on the alternator and stator. The tach signal is taken off the AC output of the alternator. The tach reads the cycles per second of the alternator output and converts it to RPM. The tach is not adjustable.
