While trying to start my friend's Wellcraft (5.7/V8 Alpha One) SN OF148229, if the engine does not start within 20-30sec, a buzzer sounds until the boat is started or the key is turned off. (Sounds like an overheat buzzer) What type of buzzer is this? Does it just indicate that the key is on and there is no water flowing? By the way, I've already begged him to buy the manual.<br />Any advise would be welcome.

That buzzer is a good thing, it letting you know that the engine is ready to go. I think it has something to do with the fuel or oil pump. It's been a while so I can't remember for sure.

Thanks for the input, that buzzer definitely gets your attention. People look at you like the boat will blow up when that buzzer starts going off at the ramp. Just wanted to know if it is normal, because usually a sound like that doesn't mean anything good..lol :)

Northwoods, are you saying that it is a buzzer that lets you know that the fuel or oil pump is primed?

joshin, that buzzer does a couple of things..#1 is it reminds people to turn the key off...lessens the dead battery thing.....it will alarm if the oil press is low or if engine temp is too high...also if remote gear lube resivoir gets too low....all good things.

Much thanks ODD1, Northwoods Jimmy... I thought it was a bad idea to disable it, glad we didn't. Now I can tell him what it's for; thanks for letting me know.

Let me post my two cents.... I have the same engine and let me tell you, I love that sound! When you don't get that sound it's time to worry. Last year I was up at Green lake, WI fishing and the next morning I went out to the boat to leave, turn the key and noticed no buzzer. Of course the thing wouldn't start. Ended up being the kill switch went bad which is also linked in through this buzzer system. Trust me, you will begin to enjoy that sound.

495V, Thanks alot for the input! One more question, should we wait until we hear the buzzer before we attempt to start the boat? I guess the actual delay time is closer to 10-15sec, but my my friend has NEVER waited to hear the buzzer before trying to turn her over.

Our systems must be a little different, I'm not sure. My buzzer sounds once the key is turned to acc..(almost immediately) and goes off once the engine starts. Does this engine have fuel injection?

He must have some kind of primer system or something. Now I'm curious as to the differences between our buzzer's. Maybe someone else can shed some light on the subject.

Thanks 495V, from what I've read from you, I think I'll tell him to wait for the buzzer before he tries to turn it over, it'll only keep us off the water an extra 20sec.

Joshin...merc says its a 7 sec delay....they put the delay in so you DONT have to hear it when trying to start the motor....many boat manufacturer put their own style of system in...lots of them alarm as soon as you turn on the key [from the no oil pressure]...always found them irritating when trying to listen to the motor on a start....
