25 hp 1988 evinrude. runs great untill shifting to forward then kills ,reverse works great, idles perfect only dies in forward.have checked it as well as poss. in a pontoon still in water thanks for some ideas

Have you checked the compression and spark on all cylinders? If not, do so and let us know what you find.

spark is great, compression is good, it runs like a clock in neutral and reverse, but dies if in forward. I was doing some community service work and hit upon a sand & clay bar and the problem started about 5min. later, prop was not damaged and lower end is good was only going about 1mph at time seems more of a coincidence than the problem

this is usually not recommended, as it can take out an impeller, but tilt the motor up, so the prop is out of the water, start and shift to forward. don't run it more than a couple of seconds. what i'm trying to find out, is the load killing the motor or the lower unit binding, killing it.

better yet if you can get a hose and muffs to it. that would be better than possible jeopordizing the impeller.

Due to the design of the propeller, reverse requires more of the engine out put than forward does....... so we have something unusual here.

I would strongly suspect that the propeller, when in forward gear, is being forced into the gearcase which would create a great amount of friction, which in turn would drag that engine to a stop.
