I represent a northern California dealer that offers jet boats powered by Marine Power and KEM Equipment.Since the advent of CARB requirements I have been alarmed at the new unit breakdowns both ignition and fuel.Anyone else seeing this trend?

You would'nt because you are in North Carolina.I'll share this with you because someone will be shoveing this crap down your throat in the near future. The California Air Resources Board [C.A.R.B.] set a series of emmission guidelines that engine makers had to meet to do buisiness in Ca.No big deal for Mercruiser or Volvo as they can absorb the cost to fit their carbuerated product into compliance. However some of the smaller engine makers are left scrambling if they want to compete in this market. That scramble has led to a huge new out of the crate or shortly there after failure rate. These boats are often used in the whitewater rivers and if they fail mid riffle, well, not good.

Yup, Mercruiser and Volvo don't have to worry just yet. They are putting out 60's/70's technology that meets the CARB 3 rating. I don't think that's putting any engine manufacturer at a disadvantage but maybe I'm missing the point?

hello
I understand more than you think. as a youth I was working in the Vallejo area, I was C.A.R.B cetified for brake, emissions and lamps to do state inspections.
most the technology that volvo and merc use is the same as the rest. most is developed by GM for the marine market. I to have noticed a lot of failures on 5.7L engines. most have hechen en mexico cast on the port side of the block.

but yes PCM and some others are having a problem with them. myself I think the airfuel system is not properly calibrated for extended high speed use. I have seen more swallowed valves in the past 3 years than in the previous 20.

The problem that I am seeing is aircraft style fuel systems with pump failures, and rpm activated timing switch failures. Our shop do'es a good job of making sure things work before they leave the yard and water test most units. These things are failing after a few hours at a rate of 2 outta 3 if we do'nt have to tweak something on the intial water test. Then we have to argue for warranty compensation which of course never covers the time if you can coax them into giving you anything at all.

Hondon
what motors are these? we have had a lot of 5.7 failures with PCM and marine power. and getting warrenty money from them is like picking hen's teeth. we have a twin jet aluminium tour boat that has eaten the last 4 engines. some dont even make the breakin period. but at the initial water test all systems worked and no problems noted, fuel system vacum checks well, timing and exhaust temps check well. we have learned to document everything and do laptop readouts at the delivery. and its still hard to get a warrenty claim with some marinisers.

Mostly 5.7s by KEM and Marine Power but we just had a 4.3 with the same senario.Sad thing is that unit was a first time boat buyers dream come true and a hard deal to close. When the unit left our shop it had over an hour on it with demos etc, and this person and his family put another hour or so on it .Then mid riffle ,downstream from the cabin, the thing hiccups, sputters ,then stalls. That was not a pleasant expierance for them and I did not enjoy my conversation with that family, especially the wife, on the following Monday morning. That was a KEM unit that I trouble shot down to a faulty harness .I've done a couple out of warranty ECM type repairs on Pleasure Craft powered units but they do not have a huge presence here.
