I have a 1963 Starcraft hull that has this type steering. The old cable was cracked and getting caught in the pulleys so I bought a new cable.I can't figure out how to run the cable at the steering wheel so it will work.On the backside of the s/wheel there is like a big pulley that the cable wraps around somehow and then on to the rest of the boat. Can anyone explain how this is done.I am sure this is a simple, silly question but if you don't ask,you won't know so...Anyone who can help please do.Thank you in advance for your time.

Re: cable/pulley steering system question

You need to look at the spool on the steering shaft. You have to wind the cable on it in such a manner that as the wheel is turned, cable is let out on one side and taken up on the other side. The ends are routed to the motor via the pulleys, and there is a spring tensioner on each side. There should be enough tension to take all slack out and stretch the spring a little. Too much tension cam pull the blocks the pulleys are attached to off of the sides. Make sure you wind it so the motor turns the right way also. It is hard to describe, you will have to play with it until you get it right. Good luck...

Jason J,just wanted to thank you for your input,I got it hooked up now and it is working. That is one step closer. The spool on my boat has 2 holes in it and I was trying to use them.I just wrapped the cable around the steering spool 2-3 times and then on to the back to the motor and it worked without using the holes. Thanks again.

Another way to visualize it, Is to remember, The Steering wheel is in the Middle of the Cable... Not the end....

Merc,<br />The 2 holes are there so the cable can be slipped in one and out the other then wrapped. The reason for doing it that way was to prevent the cable from slipping on the drum.
