Will this drum work. I normally see (Thread) type separations for the cable, this is just (2) sections.

I've seen them before and it will work. Just wind the cable correctly.

Re: Cable steering drum?

Should work OK. It works by winding on and winding off, if that makes sense. On my drum I fed the cable through the inside of the drum until I had equal lengths of cable. Then I didn't have to rig a way to secure the cable. I wound it so the port cable was closest to the wheel and both cables fed to pulleys off the top of the drum.

Some where in the forums is drawing or two by tashasdaddy who has since passed away. RIP This thread has drawings for cables on one side and on both sides http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topics-questions-not-engine-topics/drum-cable-steering-281025.html

Re: Cable steering drum?

How do you (attach) the cable to the Drum. Can you run the cable through the drum (hole) from the (outside) in and tie a knot? and repeat for the other side?
I havePicture 303.jpg read several articles from the site here however I have not understood the actual (method) of original (attachment) to the drum.

Thanks,

Re: Cable steering drum?

Double the cable like a long hair pin. Feed the two ends from the inside of the drum. In your pic above the ends will come out the two holes. Pull the ends out until they are equal. No knots needed.

Re: Cable steering drum?

Thanks, how come once you hear the solution you go "why did'nt I think of that"?
Hey at anyrate thanks for your info..
Plus in reading when you originally answered, I guess you explained it then. The "hair pin" analogy is what did it.

Hey that sounds so simply, and in re reading earlier answers I guess you answered then too. It was long hair pin analogy that pulled it off.
Thanks for the re-answer.

Well it appears that Man who answers twice needs to have it explained twice.

That's why you double the cable.

Wait til you start wrapping the cable around the drum. Hair pins are springy. :faint2:

Re: Cable steering drum?

So nothing is free. Hey, so both sides will wrap at the same time, so you just unwind it by hand'and then wind the opposite side and wrap it in opposite direction?
Tape off the the half of the spool thats wound and repeat only in opposite direction the last half and you got it done?

Sounds like I'm making it harder than it should be, maybe I should just go out and get a (paddle) huh!

Thanks again for the answers and I am sure I'll have some (should of be there stories about this).

Have a great night,

Pretty much. Wrap in opposite directions and lotsa tape or something to hold it. Don't be surprised if it goes sprong a couple of times. I kept the tape on it until I got both ends hooked up at the motor end.
