Cable steering problem

I was recently on the lake when my cable steering came apart. I have it back together, but the cable keeps coming off of the steering column. it has a hole that the cable threads through. I get everything looking like it should work, and when I turn the wheel, the cable pops off and coils up in a mess. It seems like it should be so &^%^&$& simple, but I cant figure it out. I feel like an idiot asking...Help me if you can....PLEASE

If no one responds for a while....send a PM to Tashasdaddy. He's a guru with the cable systems and I think has a diagram.
