I am connecting my SeaTalk ST60+ devices to my new A70D chart plotter. I am installing and wiring the NMEA0183 data interface, new transducer, etc., and have one minor question.
To make the install work, I need to extend the Power cable that comes from the three daisy-chained ST60+ devices. The normal SeaTalk cable is shielded and contains two plastic-coated connectors (red and yellow) plus a bare "screen" wire. All wires are stranded. Only two of the wires connect to the 12 volt power source: red and screen.
I don't have enough of the SeaTalk cable to connect to the power source. The wire run of the extension, including twists and turns, is less than ten feet. Is it OK to use unshielded two-connector wire to finish the connection of the red and screen wires to the power source?
If that cannot be done. I have a lot of shielded four-conductor-plus-bare-wire cable left over from installs of other Raymarine equipment. The wires are of a lighter gauge than the SeaTalk wire. Could I use some of that cable to connect to the power source, using only the red wire and the bare wire?
I would feel better using a heavier gauge wire if shielding were not a factor.
Thanks for your help.
