morning everybody>>

I have a 2000 21ft Angler boat with a 150 johnson oceanpro same year as the boat..

it wont go into reverse just grinds, tried to get it to go, just twice in the water then I let it alone..
on land it will go right in..

talked to a mechanic he said it could be just the cables need replaced throttle n shifting OR the clutch dog is shot.
this is what I dont understand??? tried twice to get it to go into reverse and I didnt try to force it at all??

we are putting new cables on they are 12 years old, he adjusted the shift cable all the way could not get anymore out of it.

what do you guy's think??

not any help because I don't know much. But I'll bet my next paycheck its not the cables.

There is a specific procedure for adjusting the shift cable. Do you think the mechanic did it properly? There are specs for the required movement of the shift cable. Did he check those? It could be that the cable is misadjusted, the control is bad or the gearcase is bad. Was the gearcase removed recently? Was the shift lever height checked/adjusted?

the gearcase was rebuilt in 2006. I didnt own it until last year.. as far as the mechanic he did this for 20 yrs working for someone else, then started working for hisself. as far as the gearcsae being a part as far as I know it has not been..
like I told the machanic it did it twice the last time in the water, that was around thanksgiving..the rest of the year, spring summer and fall it never did the grinding

should of bet you just got back replaced cables and works great.. shifts right in to reverse
