Re: California Boaters Caution - Quagga Mussels

It's a huge concern in Califorina right now, they have just imposed an inspection to get into Clear Lake Starting the 8th of April.
What I want to know is:

Will the inspection stations be open 24 Hrs a day?
What If I want to launch at 5:00 AM. do I have to wait until 9 AM for the inspection station to open?
How am I going to access my bilge area, do I have to take my boat apart because my boat has a scrwed down cover over it?

I'm at Clear Lake now and they're more concerned with the spread of Hydrilla. Although, there some signs posted on mussels but not as much as I anticipated.

Not to worry.

I wouldn't experiement with them either. That is exactly how some invasive species get introduced into a particular ecosystem. Here in the Gulf South, we are dealing with "killer bees," aka "africanized honey bees." If I remember the history of them correctly, they came about because someone in South America was fooling around with developing a hybrid bee. By breeding afican bees with domestic bees, they ended up with the 'killer bees." Initially, the infestation was in S. America only - now it has spread into parts of Texas, Louisiana and Florida. I am not sure about Mississippi and Alabama, but it stands to reason that if Louisiana and Florida have them, they probably do too.

These things are unbelievable. They are no larger than a regular bee but they are extremely aggressive and attack in swarms with very little provocation. They have killed people and pets over and over. I am watching the situation carefully because I have a three year old who, like all little boys, likes to play outside. I sure hope it doesn't get to the point where I live that I can't let him.

We also have a problem with a type of aquatic vegetation here. This one came about because someone imported it and thought it would look nice in a pond or something. They apparently thought they would be intriducing the stuff in a closed environment so it would be ok. Not so - it is all over south Louisiana now and grows so thick that you can't run a boat through it. The problems with spreading it are the same as the mussels. Trailer boaters tend to end up with seeds in the water passages of the engine(s) and as soon as they launch in another body of water, those seeds are ejected and the problem there begins.

Agreed. I was just a Lake Powell for Memorial Day, but my primary lake has been infested with these mussels. Before launching at Powell every boat has to go to a decontamination station, but the there was some girl running the station no older than 18 years old. She could not figure out how to properly position the muffs over the water intakes on my lower unit, so she just passed me. My boat had been out of the water for a couple weeks, and I have access to my dry bilge, so I knew I was not in danger of contaminating Lake Powell, but I can see how another contaminated boat can be launched.

This was just reported in the San Jose Mercury News:

(06-01) 13:27 PDT Morgan Hill, CA (AP) --

Some boaters are being kept out of the water as inspectors at Santa Clara County lakes hunt for signs of invasive mussels hitching a ride.

Inspectors at one county park alone turned away 13 of 56 boats they examined Saturday after finding water in the hull or motor, which could contain zebra or quagga mussel larvae.

The invasive mussel species were first discovered in Northern California this winter in a lake near Hollister.

The tiny, fast-breeding shellfish can quickly spread to clog pipes and crowd out native species.

Boats failing the inspection are quarantined for five days and can return to county lakes after they dry out.

If they find that this problem is spreading, I'm sure they will start coming down hard on boaters. We need to take responsibility to prevent that from happening.

They're swarming at Temple Bar on Lake Mead. You can see a thin line of them on the pontoons of some of the boats that are in slips, so they're obviously in the intakes as well.

They're expected to go to the cooler, deeper water during the summer, so hulls scraped as the water temp rises should remain relatively clean until the water cools down again in the fall.
