Call Miss Utility !!!

Well now, after cleaning the nuggets from my pants, let me offer some advice. Call Miss Utility before you dig. I was planting a tree this morning next to the house and knew that code required that natural gas lines be at least 18" under ground. At 8", I found that this is not always true as a plume of dirt let loose from a retrofitted poly 3/4" line. I will be seeing a very large fine from this, but at least no one was hurt. I always call when I know I will be digging below a foot, but knew I would be well above any burried service for this hole. I was wrong, as ANY digging by law requires you call Miss Utility and I will pay dearly for this lesson...just FYI.

50k !!! that's insane. They don't charge that to a regular homeowner though I would hope.

i don't think you were digging to plant a tree, you were digging to find out what that hissing noise was and found a slit in the line...

Re: Call Miss Utility !!!

I worked at a golf course once. The new grounds super wanted to aerate the fringe around a practice "T". This had never been done before. Little did anyone know that the control wires going to a 6" well pump run just a few inches below the fringe. Needless to say that he hit those control wires. When the wires shorted out, the pump then had no way of stopping. It over pressurized the water system. It blew 3 2" relief valves, 3 hot water storage tank relief valves, and caused the 1,000 gallon storage tank to explode!. The storage tank was buried 4' below grade. When it blew, it threw all the dirt off the top of the tank with most of the dirt landing on top of the cart building roof.

Hitting a gas line is a scary thing and can get expensive. If you call and then hit something, then they foot the bill. It can save a life especially if it is a buried high voltage line! -

Yup, I hit a 440 volt buried line that fed a condo unit on the FOURTH OF JULY!!!
I had called Miss Dig and was 20' from the paint, turns out that whoever installed it made a great big loop with the feeders before hitting the meters.(Got payed by the foot maybe?)
I didn't get hurt but I darn near messed my drawers!:p
Three big ol trucks and six VERY happy repair guys getting triple time and hootin and hollerin!:D
Didn't cost me a dime!!:) It was all the fireworks I cared for though!

Chances are the Call before you dig service would not be able to locate a lot of utilities on a golf course as they would not have an "as built" with the utilities mapped out for a reference.
They could detect the wires if they knew where to look but more often than not if they don't see any services on their reference sheet in the area you want to dig they won't even check it.
I have done a lot of work around existing factories that are notorious for doing "in house" repairs and renovations and much of their work is unmarked or if it ever was marked the engineering dept. does not know where the plans are that may or may not have been followed.
One of the clients of an excavating company I worked for was a big electrical contractor who used us for the excavation when they had those big generators to install for backup power to commercial buildings and it always involved a lot of handwork as you could never take anything for granted.
It is surprising what you will find with no warning tape or even sand in a trench to alert you.Ron G

Turns out I might be OK. They determined that the line was so poorly installed that it probably would have made no difference. The line was at 7" when code requires 24" and it was a poly line that should have had a wire run with it for detection. The wire was not installed. There is also a clause in the law that exempts "hand digging" by homeowners from being required to call. The gas line is my only buried service and I sure know where it is now. Very scary lesson learned!

You had me completely "freaked out". I'm always digging around, in my backyard. (No bodies) I never dreamed of "calling-Miss Dig".

I think you're in the clear. You had no idea and what you dug up wasn't "code".

Keep us posted.

Wow! Glad your OK!

Re: Call Miss Utility !!!

This is kind of off topic but since were kind of on topic(yea I said it ok) I'll mention it. It may save someones life.

If your ever digging, or working around high voltage for that matter and hit a power line and see sparks STOP and wait.(seems obvious I know but please read on). Normally the breaker at the substation will detect the short and trip. HOWEVER most will automatically reset ONCE or twice before fully tripping.

The purpose of this is so if a branch or something falls across a High Transmission line and creates a short for a second two, the breaker will reset in hopes that the short has either fallen off or burnt off the line, thus contuning service.

This is important because if your on a piece of machinary and a line is struck either above or below ground and starts to spark, when the sparks stop you may assume it's safe and attempt to get off the equipment. If you survived striking the line you weren't grounded and thus safe, chances are when you go to get off the machine your going to grab metal, thus grounding yourself, when the breaker automatically resets you'll be fried.

SO JUST STOP AND WAIT A MINUTE TO ASSES THE SITUATION. If you didn't get zapped, your safe(r) for the time being.

Also did you know if your in the area of a power line coming down (like striking a power pole in a accident) when you leave the immediate area(within say 75 ft.) you should hop like a bunny with your feet together?

Why?

Good question. With the power line on the ground it has closed the circuit to ground. As we know from lightening and school, electricity always takes the path of least resistance to ground. There is a chance if you walk away, the amount of distance in your stride(distance between your feet) could create a difference of resistance that is lower to your foot further away from the power line, to that of the ground of the foot nearest downed line. Basically your body would create a easier path to ground by going up one leg and down the other. Hopping like a bunny virtually eliminates this possability.

What the hell, I've all ready written a novel and sound like a bad safety video you have yo sit through at work, why not one more.

If you get shocked through the chest(up one arm and down the other) GO TO THE HOSPITAL AND GET CHECKED OUT, even if it was only 110volts. The electrical impulse traveling from one arm to the other goes right across your chest and your heart. This can cause a abnormal heart beat, that can easily be masked and symptoms covered by the adrenalin rush. You'll feel fine because the adrenalin is causing your heart to pump harder, as the adrenalin wears off, your heart because it's not pumping correctly with weaken and you'll drop from cardiac arrest. This has been known to happen hours after the injury.

Bottom line, just be careful and when working with electricity turn it off if you can.

Ok I'm done boring you now, but maybe one day this information can save your life.

In a kinda related issue, I work in the telecommunications field for one of the largest telecommunication companies. Part of my duty is to direct "disaster recovery" (we really call it different in the company) efforts. Well guess who caused the problem yesterday? Not a drunk driver knocking some poles with fibers, not the DOT doing road move. It was the locate company that also is a master contractor. They did their own locate and missed it so they end up cutting the fiber and isolating over 3000 customers.... You bet we are charging them too!!!
