I have a 1985 17' Rinker. With a Mercruiser 140 4 cylinder, and a Mercruiser foot. The boat is at about 4000 rpm when maxed out. I Messed up the prop real bad this last weekend, and unfortunately, I dont know enough about boats to know what was on there other than it is a 3 blade aluminum. I have no idea what I should replace it with. IE stainless, 4 blade, pitch etc? I am still trying to learn so be kind. :) and thanks in advance.

Remove the prop from the boat, and look it over carefully for any numbers stamped on it. Report back. Without knowing exactly the size/pitch of prop you currently have, it will be difficult to provide any accurate advice.

Often numbers are hidden under the retaining washers, obscured by gunk and debris, etc...but with very few exceptions, the numbers are there somewhere....and very important to know

Ok, I removed the prop and it has J 15.25 X 15P. And it has an M in two different square shaped boxes. Now that I am having to replace it, a better performance prop/ quicker plaining would be great. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Calling all experts!! :)

That's a 15 pitch prop...very surprisingly small pitch, given your current rpms. I assume you have a 1.98 gear ratio since that's pretty much what all the 3.0 Mercruisers were/are...can you confirm this figure? Maybe it's been swapped out.

I'm curious what your top speed is when you are at 4,000 rpm? According to prop calculator, this boat is challenged to get much past 25 mph? Is that true, or is the boat much faster than that? If it's faster than 30 or 35, I will assume the outdrive is not original, and the gear ratio has changed...

Something just seems off, and I'm not convinced it's the prop alone.

When was the last time this motor has been treated to a fully comprehensive tune-up? Compression check, new spark plugs AND wires, distributor cap & rotor, points (if equipped), set base timing, check advance timing, throttle cable adjustment, fuel filter clean/replace, etc. etc....

I highly suggest you consider doing all of above before trying to reprop the boat. IMO you seem to be down on horsepower for some reason....but maybe not if your speed is higher than I think it is.

Ayuh,... I agree,... I'd bet the drive is the wrong ratio...

Re: Calling all experts!! :)

I am not sure on the ratio, I have only owned the boat for a short time. Is there a way for me to check that? I can get the boat up to about 37 mph. I have changed the coil, points, condenser, cap and rotor. I have not yet done the rest that you have suggested. I plan to in the next couple of weeks, however I took some good chunks out of my prop this last weekend so I am going to have to replace it anyway so I just figure I might as well trade up. Again I am not sure how to check the gear ratio or if the outdrive has been replaced.

Re: Calling all experts!! :)

how to check gear ratio:
http://www.mercstuff.com/drivegearratio.htm

37 mph on a 3.0L is pretty good...normal. So something tells me you have a V8 1.5 ratio outdrive on your 4 cylinder boat. Most 3.0's were equipped basically with 2.0 ratio.

OR, your tach is way off.

If the tach is accurate and you have a 1.5 ratio outdrive, this is OK, but it limits your propeller choices. You currently have a 15, and you're under-revving. So I guess I would suggest a 13 pitch prop. This is extremely small in pitch, and most 3.0's don't need it, but in your case it is probably necessary to overcome th steep non-original gear ratio. It should help your holeshot noticably and help you maybe even get you a little more top speed (but not much).

Again, this assumes your tach is reading accurate. If the tach is wrong, all bets are off....and my recommendation is flat wrong.

Well, thanks so much to all for all of the help. Now I know where to start and where to go next.
