Look for Columbine Falls. That's what 12V references. Once you turn the corner past Pearce Ferry the Canyon walls jump up and have the unique "steps" of the Grand canyon. It's actually obvious when you are in.

Sounds like fun to me too, I'm in!

the wife says "Fine, take your boat and be sure to take both kids, see ya when you get back".

Same response from my boss, we aren't married to the same woman are we :lol:

Great. That's 4 already if QC's in. I'm on here sporadically these winter days so we can bump it up and take a head count at some point probably in Feb. That will give us a couple months to plan it. It would be great if we could get 5-10 or even more. I know I can probably get 2 or 3 from TBar to go, maybe more. It could blow up and 10-15 from TBar go. It's very possible! The only problem would be finding a beach big enough

thanks for holiday wishes and back at all:joyous:

this would fit will with my plans and would be a great time to meet you guys. thinking more about temple this winter any how.

the 230 can be goooood to 3' of water but have to be careful.

for a trip like this, wish i had the old alpha drive on......any way will watch 4-m

by the by, they had put a wi-fi router in at the bull frog slips a couple of years ago. not great band width but can check e-mail.

any chance they have done the same at temple and echo. temple and echo still the same company as caldwell and catherine's landing?

I'm in depending on boat. I've got pretty used to the non-tow type deal leaving her at Havasu. Let me get my head wrapped around paying attention to my trailer again

just realized the other day i have to got through the trailer on 230.

not really go through but at least jack up each wheel and grease bearing and ck, ck lights. double check tires.

have run it back and forth to powell, but to be honest, have slipped a bit on maintenance for it the last couple of years.

told jill i would drop the 230 on her 310 trailer...........:laugh:

We've been meaning to make that trip for two years...scary just by ourselves with 3 little ones. This sounds like it would be a good way to see G.C. Are kids welcome? Or is this just a man-trip? Also we will be in a 24' Vista, think we can take that up there?

You and I are in the same size of boat. I turned back in October 2011 before we got close but if we have "guides" ahead of us we will be better off. If not we can hang out and anchor together. We have 4 grandkids so we'll bring some of them if they are for rent at the time. :D

Everyone's definitely welcome! I'm just throwing this out there as an idea for everyone to see what kind of interest there is. There seems to be plenty to move forward with this for sure.

I will plan on pre-running up past the mouth once the water level is high enough. I'll check depths and flow to make sure the boats that have deeper draft can make it. I'll keep everyone updated on here. Also, if anyone else has, or is going to check it out just post it so we can keep tabs.

I've made the trip many times, probably 20, and have gone all the way as far as you can before the rapids. There's a great beach there but fuel is a concern because the round trip to TBar is approx 150 miles. You can carry extra fuel or drop off a can at Sandy Point, and top off there on the way up and have fuel when we get back in case you're low. Doing that cut's off about 30 miles of fuel consumption. You can also launch out of Meadview at South Cove, by Sandy Point.

Happy Holidays all :biggrin-new:

150 miles, WOW, I didn't think it was that far. Looks like I need to run my boat long distance to check fuel consumption, see how much extra fuel I would need.

12V,

Yes. There's a buoy in the middle of the river there that reads "NO UPSTREAM TRAVEL" . So if you've been to Separation you've seen it.

We don't have to go that far. We could even have 2 groups, 1 that goes to Separation and another that stops around Columbine Falls. Columbine may be a good option if you have little ones that don't like to ride in the boat all day. :thumb:

If you can, when you get the chance, give us the GPS numbers of the beach you talking about. Anyone interested in camping out there overnight? Just thinking that was my first thought.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Just came across this thread. Don't know how I missed it.
This is a place I?ve been wanting to get back to. We should be able to work out a mutually agreeable date.
For years, back when the San Fernando Valley Power Squadron had an active trailer boating group, we would go on Thanksgiving weekend, launch at Temple Bar, camp on the beach with our boats, cook the Turkeys in a sand pit & have a Thanksgiving Feast.
As I recall, entering the Canyon is a bit tricky, there is a natural River Delta complete with sand bars. We would go about 30 miles into the Canyon, to "Separation Canyon". There was a bronze plaque on the Wall commemorating the spot where some of the members of the Powell expedition left the main group & were killed by Indians. Wonder if it's still there?
It's worth the trip. People travel from all over the world to see the Grand Canyon. Not many get to see it looking up from their own boat.
Please email me with whatever plans you have.

PS Re Distance: I need a Mid Channel distance between T Bar & Separation. Anyone have a good source. I carry 45 Gal @ 2.5 MPG that gives me a range of about 110 miles or a 55 mile Round Trip. I can carry some extra Gas in cans.

Hi John; I know there are some online resources we can use to get close. I'll check into it in the coming weeks. With your range I'm sure you'll want to carry extra fuel. Those that can't carry extra fuel could use Sandy Point as a starting point. That will cut around 30 miles off the trip.

Check out this PDF I made with reference points
View attachment GC Trip 2012.pdf

Here is a shot I found on Google Maps of one of the "Beaches" labeled on the pdf map. You can go onto Google Maps and check out the area as well.

It's been about 30 years since I've made this trip. Thinking about it I recall carrying extra cans of gas.
I Stepped off the distance 3 different times from the center of the channel at T Bar to Separation Canyon (Using the Google Map that comes up on my computer.) Came up with 153 miles Round Trip. Think that's close to it. I'll need to determine my most fuel efficient speed + carry extra gas. Glad it's not planned for next week, I need to do my homework.
Looking forward to this one.

Anyone interested in camping out there overnight?

I'm in for camping, though I'm not sure if camping is allowed up in the canyon, without permit. It would depend on water conditions and if people with "Grand Canyon experience" were staying. I wouldn't want to venture back through 40 miles of unknown chocolate milk water by myself.

I have 27 gallons onboard and get roughly 4+ MPG, so about the same range as your boat. I was planning to take 3 extra 5 gallon fuel tanks to dump on the beach as 12V suggested, but still need to see what the actual mileage is for my boat.

We know they adjust the water flow thru the Canyon at Glenn Canyon Dam. If they reduce the flow overnight we could be high & dry in the morning. Perhaps it's better to overnight on a beach on the Lake, where the water level is more constant.
------------------------------------------
Right on about not going alone. My old memory may not be great but I do recall the "Buddy Boat" system works, I'm ready to pull you off a sandbar & you're ready to pull me off. Travel slowly, with practice you may be able to "read the water" to try and avoid the sandbars.

Good call jax, current does eat up fuel. I've seen it from running my jon boat up towards Hoover Dam, opposed to running it on the lake or going down stream.
