Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

That was a scary day. Hoped to get some good pics, but this was all I could get.

Oh man..Sorry the wind busted your trip. I know there's nothing worse than a paranoid crew when your in 5 footers..been there, done that.

I wish I coulda been there for you. At least you got a good spot in the front row between Team Sikora and Gunner, the Parrot Head. He's a great guy & works in the pay station up the road when it's open.

I guess you didn't get to play the no cell phone service trick. They were busy enough helping out I'm sure. The night must have been fun if the wind continued through it. Well, you have all Summer ahead of you and that's when the weather is so much more predictable. These Spring patterns sure aren't. :(

I've been boating alot in my life but mostly with parents, boats I rented and other's boats and have never seen that kind of aggressive lake action. I couldn't show it at the time but I was very concerned for my family's lives because of my poor decision to head out.

I got a glimpse of Team Sikora's boat on the trip to the dumpster....very nice looking even with a cover on it.

I guess it's not a good omen to head out when yours is the only trailer in the parking area. No more spring boating for us.

Thanks to the sailing couple who were at Temple Bar Marina this week that helped me to decide today was another bad day to boat and offered facilities of the hotel room if we needed.

I got to thinking about how we make our decision to go out if it looks bad after I read that. With a group, which we pretty much always go out in, we see each other all the time and there's always conservations about the lake, the weather, etc., so it's usually a group decision based on information and discussions with several people. It sure is a lot easier to watch the white caps from the comfort of dry land than when you're in them.

My little story about the 5 footers and the family hails from Havasu about 17 years ago. We went there to plant a dedication tree on the island for a friend that died several years before. I had an 18' open bow i/o at the time. We decided to take a trip from the island up the river to Topock for lunch, which is about 20 miles from where we were. I saw the wind was starting to pick up and wanted to keep passengers to a minimum so I went to ask a couple of people to go, and when I got back my wife had done the same thing. We had a small argument, and instead of being the bad guy, I went out with a boat filled to legal capacity against my better judgment. I didn't even enjoy the trip that much because my gut feelings told me I shouldn't even be out there. the trip up was fine, but all I could do at Topock was stand overlooking the river and watch the wind conditions. The bummer was I couldn't feel the wind from where I was standing because it was blowing over the building which I was on the leeward side of.
When white caps picked up - on the river, mind you - I told everyone we needed to head back right away. I thought about calling someone to drive up from the lake with the trailer and pick us and the boat up, thinking I had been in worse, but I decided to go for it. I didn't realize how bad the lake was until we got to the mouth. WOW. I had never seen it so rough, and this is with many years spent there. So I passed out the life jackets.. I think this scared everyone even more.. The waves were so big and the troughs so deep that my outdrive was hitting in every one until we got into deeper water. I watched the waves pass by my side, towering above me as I had the bow pitched as high as she would go. Adult women crying, with my wife calmly trying to deal with them. I saw boats here and there in distress and calling to us on the way back to the ramp, but there was absolutely nothing I could do except send help when I got in. If I would have stopped, I would have swamped and sunk with out a doubt.
When we made it in it was almost surreal, like it didn't really happen. Everyone regained composure and all was back to normal, but boy did we party that night!:D

In the end, lesson learned..and my wife has never again questioned my judgment - when it comes to boating anyway..

Good to hear everyone is safe. I learned years ago it's just not worth it to go out in windy conditions. It's no fun fighting a losing battle, mother nature will win. Plus no one is going to enjoy themselves so I don't even bother. Now getting caught by a summer storm is another story. If you can't get off the lake just secure everything and ride it out, they usually don't last long. Mid to late May the wind should clam down, the air temp rise along w/ the water temp. I'll play golf till the fan is turned off, it won't be long now and then I'll be boating till Halloween

Then the wind really picked!

We were just west of the temple with storm clouds to the se and sw in 5' + swells and it dies again.

WOW mz, that was a nail-biter trip. I was thinking of you guys yesterday when the winds were blowing through Vegas. I hope I didn't give you any bad advice. (I've been known to head out in those type of conditions fishing ) I had a similar trip on Mohave years ago in 6'ers and the engine died several times, not a good feeling. Add in the family and it makes the seriousness of the situation 100x worse. Glad you all made it back safe and I can see why you called the trip early, I did the same when I didn't like how things were looking.

What's your anchor setup like? I have 600-700' of anchor line, 2 chains and a couple heavy anchors for those type of situations, had most of it in the water a couple of times.

Oh yeah, we kissed the dock too. Pulling back in it was relatively calm so I swung it around to let the boat drift into the dock and as I jumped off, a gust slammed the stern into the dock. Though I ripped a vent cover off the side of the boat, but it just bounced of. Stinkin bumpers did no good and the boat got another beauty mark.

Better luck on your next trip, I'm hoping I get better weather next time too. I've found that trips I plan last minute go better than trips I plan weeks/months in advance. Go out when the weather is good, instead of being stuck with what mother nature throws at you.

Been there did that last night. I think it was more to calm nerves than a party......:D And boy did we have arguments between wife and I planning the exit to get back to shore. She wanted me to just run it aground and all of us hang out on land and wait for a ride.

My boater Mzann, that was a real trip. Those are the ones that stay in your memories forever.
I am really glad your family is alright and only the boat suffered injuries.
Heading into 30 mph winds was crazy, man you really wanted to go boating bad.
From my experiance always head into the wind and find a cove that breaks it off, then stay there till better wind conditions, sometimes it will give you a 20min window to get back,if planned right.overall, you did the right thing and kept everyone togeather. As far as the rangers coming to help,i am surprized they didnt do anything.they are usually there right away for these situations, but will ignore you for half a day if you run out of gas.now you know your boat wasnt ready and your anchor system sucked.next time you will be the one who saves the family like yours when rangers dont show.If this ever happens near calville ill be there with you through the storm.Personally,i like going into the waves less than riding with them.In the wind, the most important thing aboard your boat is the motor and bumpers and anchor and lines and speed.that boat of yours is starting to look like my old tinny now.not really but you know what i mean.Im really glad your alright and your boat is stilll floating,it could have been another story.

We were out 2 weekends ago. Camped Friday night, woke up Saturday to some wind. In the cove it wasn't bad, but looking out I could see some whitecaps forming about 10:30am.. She sunbathed for a while until it looked a little to rough and I said it was time to go. We left at 3 or so and good thing we did! News said 45-60mph gusts and I felt every bit of that coming back up the hill toward home!

Not at all Dan.

I have only 1 of the 12 pound fluke style anchors. I'll be better outfitted next time.

You should be fine with that size. Maybe more chain?

I carry a fluke like yours and a box anchor, which I've never had to use by the way. I also use a slide shore anchor when mooring or beaching.

There's not much out there that will hold a big boat like yours in big waves. I think the only real solution is to be in a protected cove with the wind, but no real wave action.

3 points of tie off at 120* would have been nice. 4 at 90* would have been better. Chain is 2' long maybe it should be 4'. That short trip whooped me. I'll look at when and if we go out in a different way now.

^^^ Yup, I have 20' of 5/16 chain, Harbor Freight special. I lopped it off at 7' for normal conditions, then add the 13'er if it's going to be gnarly or if we are sleeping aboard. A long chain keeps the anchor pulling horizontal and digging into the bottom, instead of being pulled up and out.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I switched to the box anchor, shore spike set up a couple years ago and have had no problems w/ it. We were at Powell last year houseboating when a nasty T-storm rolled in w/ gust of 50+ and kicking up 4'/5'ers. Had the boat anchored off shore w/ the box anchor and tied to the shore spike on the beach, it held just fine. That storm really shook the HB but w/ all 4 HB anchors buried 3' in the sand they held, that HB was one big sail in that storm. The chairs got blown down the beach but we had time to take down the pop up shades. That picture I post earlier of Powell was taken just after that storm past.

Oh yea! Houseboats are sooo much fun in the wind. :D At least you were able to get the canopies down.

I've got a pic somewhere taken from a nearby hilltop of our canopies after a mini tornado-dust devil came through and wadded them all up in our little protected cove. Now it never fails - we use dog leash screw-in hold downs on each corner and never have a problem...at least not yet
