year = 1981
model=J25RCIM
yes it has a flywheel with teeth
i am not sure if it has a bracket.. i see space where starter would fit.
the j25rcim is pretty much identical to some of the models that have the starter just no starter and has pull rope instead.

thanks

I have the same motor.
You will need a starter bracket.

edit: I sometimes see starter and solenoid assemblies w/bracket on ebay from $100-150.

Dan,
did you checkout the Cold Start Procedure (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225510)?

Not sure why you're having a hard time? Maybe it's something the forum can help with?

I woke up my motor this Spring with 2-3 pulls. It never takes more than that.

Please don't get me wrong, electric start is a good thing to have anyway.

sure make a list of all the parts you need. just make sure you are getting the right parts, all staters are not the same, mounting brackets, the bendix. you are also getting new equipment, that will last, rather than a starter with 2 starts left on the brushes, or burnt armature.

I have a 77 25 seahorse that starts easy enough but I would still like the starter. Picked up 2 40 horse power plants with starters but I think the brackets are different. Both starters work great. Are they the same starter if I can get a bracket. Not to worried about having the motor charge the battery. I can hook it up to a battery tender. So if any one has a bracket for a 77 25 hp johnson I could use one.
