It appears that all these years I am not the only person with grand designs on inflatable boating in Jamaica Bay. So... I propose maybe we can do something like a meet-up/ raft-up. If there are any others that frequent Jamaica Bay and would be interested, this thread would be a good place to post it. Thinking maybe with a little back and forth conversation we can figure out a day when a few (or more) people can make it. That would be pretty cool. So, if you are interested. I'm guessing Name, Days/ Times you'd prefer and we go from there.:D

Thinking maybe a fishing day, or just a bay cruise to get people familiar (I still get lost) or just a play it by ear, exchange of info type of day... Hell... do em all!!! This could be cool.

I'll start:

1) Al (aka Sinistre1)/ Sat and Sun are best for me but every other Fri works too. Mornings through late afternoons Mercury Quicksilver 340s and Saturn 365 both run on 15hp Johnson outboard (Mercury has since been sold!)

2) Weimed- Zodiac Zoom 350s 6hp Mercury and 15hp Mercury

3) Smashed- Saturn 430 (14ft), Tohatsu 9.8 outboard

4) MaaxK- Zodiac Zoom 340 and 15hp yamaha and Avon 400 w 15hp Yamaha

5) Fedor- Saturn 365 and Mariner 15 hp outboard

6) PGNYC- Azzuro Mare (Saturn upgrade) and Tohatsu 9.8 outboard

FWIW, I am planning to head out on Sunday. Haven't settled on the time yet but morning is likely, between 7-11Am. Will narrow it down as weekend gets nearer. Any interested parties... you know what to do, lol.

You are definitely welcome to come along, the only caveat is the time. Between77 and 11 is when i plan to head out. Realistically will be more like 9 or 10 since i will be working sat and attending a function sat eve. I will narrow down time as weekend approaches. How is that time for you. I could always drop you off at shore earlier and head back out.

I'd say probably add a spinning reel and a couple of diamond jigs. Shouldn't be too much in the bay besides bluefish, fluke (maybe.. water is warming) and small porgies. This time of year it is more cruising then fishing unless you can get out of the bay. What bottom fishing there is will be a moot point for me as I don't eat the bottom fish from inside the bay... long story. If nothing else, you'll get to see one of mys set ups. Likely be the old boat since I haven't had time to set up the new one yet.

Sounds good. Ill leave fresh bait in the freezer. Hey I am not taking my motor it looks like my primer bulb had a hole and doesn't pump gas into my carb so your setup will need to convince me not to buy a small 5hp lehr engine :)

Not saying to leave the bunker and clams, more choices are better. Just saying not to forget the jigs since the blues are probably a best bet. I just bought a new primer bulb 2 months ago, lol. They don't last forever, though I got a good 5 years out of mine. It seemed to just turn rock hard over the last winter and couldn't squeeze it. Won't speak to the propane motor, as I have never seen one live, but, I have considered it so I wouldn't be the best person to NOT convince you. Remember I too am always looking to make this process easier all around. Nothing is off the table, if it works!

bought a kota riptide 50 (coming Tuesday). after seeing that guy on his m4 cruising the bay on a trolling motor I will also try. last 2 times my force 15 failed on me which failed so bad I wasn't even able to launch. seeing a guy cruise the bay on his m4 convinced me it is doable. I will try it on flat waters. I would not even take my boat n choppy waters even on a 50hp motor. Hopefully it will work out cruising at 3-4mph. MY boat weight is a concern. My total onboard weight is about 500 including boat and 2 adults. hopefully it works and i don't have a trolling motor spinning but boat not moving

Not sure how a trolling motor will do. Would have suggested better a 2 or 3 hp outboard but I understand if you are a little gun shy with outboards but maybe at some point yours will be spinning like a top! Gonna rest a bit and then make sure I have everything I need ready. Would hate to have a failure to launch while trying to convince you it can get easier... Murphy and his damned law!!! Lol. BTW, I assume you have a life vest? If not i'll bring one (jumpsuit orange foam job) so if you have one more fashionable, lol. Keep them for guests, lol.

That damn Murphy and his laws... I invoked his name and paid the price, lol. Had fun though!. Since all of my make life easier goodies run off a 12 volt battery... can you guess what happened (or in this case didn't.. the battery, lol). Of course it dies so no high volume low pressure shop vac, or even high pressure bravo pump. It became Weimed to the rescue and he turned me onto a trick little air mattress pump that puts out a surprising stream of air for its size. Will likely dump (not really since I use it at home anyway) the shop vac for the smaller form factor of the air mattress pump. Long story short it took forever to get the boat inflated since I had to pump the boat up by hand the rest of the way... not to mention that after I finished I found my back-up, back-up plan, a cord that I made to allow me to jump directly from the car battery. Of course I found it just in the nick of too late. My little comedy of errors aside, once the boat was inflated up to snuff, we got the engine started and off we went.. maybe a little too soon. The engine sputtered and it was enough to send me back to the care for the backup 2.5 hp, turns out I didn't let the engine warm before I goosed it. Warmed it for about a minute and all better! Lol, Weimed and I rode around the bay for the short time we had remaining. A lot of good tips were exchanged and we both learned some things that should make this easier next time out, like check your battery state, lol. In any case, the first meet up is in the books!! Looking forward to many more

Happy to hear you two got out.

Modern outboards run as advertised if kept in proper shape. I find the views on outboards you folks discuss strange after running them for many years. The only time one left me in the river, the lower main seal on a single cylinder 2 HP motor failed which is a strange mode of failure.

A trolling motor will probably disappoint. Get a small outboard in decent condition and forget being tied to a battery. Maybe you fellows can meet up with someone savvy about outboards and get a little help.

Sorry if I gave the impression I don't get along well with outboards. Any of the problems ive had with my main outboard have been user error. I ran out of gas once... that was the reason I got the back up. Yes, I KNOW I should be checking more often and I shouldn't go out with a tank less than 1//3 full but I promised myself I wouldn't be out long and I wouldn't go far and I wouldn't stay near full throttle... Lol. Got back to within 500 yards of the ramp... against full tide AND wind... very tired. After what seemed hours of rowing, I got the little outboard. Only other issues have been leaving the vent on the tank tightly closed, disconnecting the kill switch and forgetting to put it back. The motor itself has been the bees knees. I wouldn't have considered going out without it, if I didn't trust and I knew I had enough gas. Weimed was pressed for time and it was better to be safe than sorry if I had a brain drain moment, and I had a lot yesterday. 3 consecutive 6 day weeks and advancing age, lol. That said... a good time was had by all... both of us. :)

Brain drains are pretty bad. I plan on creating a written check list. It is very easy to forget stuff when you have over 10-20 different pieces to carry.

Re: Calling All New Yorkers!!!! Jamaica Bay Sib Fest???

I've often contemplated the check list route and it IS a good idea. Usually i'm thinking well in advance what I want/ need to have on that day and I at least check that stuff out. No excuses, I did miss stuff, lol. But is all good as they say. I just didn't want it to seem like we are just running around with absolutely no clue. I KNOW that I have a lot more to learn.. I also know that I have learned alot, not the least of which I have a decent motor and I have a decent chance at keeping it running in both the short and long terms.
