Re: Calling All New Yorkers!!!! Jamaica Bay Sib Fest???

I've often contemplated the check list route and it IS a good idea. Usually i'm thinking well in advance what I want/ need to have on that day and I at least check that stuff out. No excuses, I did miss stuff, lol. But is all good as they say. I just didn't want it to seem like we are just running around with absolutely no clue. I KNOW that I have a lot more to learn.. I also know that I have learned alot, not the least of which I have a decent motor and I have a decent chance at keeping it running in both the short and long terms.

I got excited and started my motor today. took a bit but got that sucker going! I also ordered a new primer bulb that goes on the engine it self. I started it without even using the bulb on the engine

So I brought my 3.2 tank home and double bagged it. The only thing I smell now is the plastic heavy duty garbage bag lol. But wow is all I have to say after cruising with sinistre. Putting anything less then a 9.9 on your sib is a crime (transom boats). That 15 Johnson ate the bay. Had a nice wave runner feel to it.

Awwwww shucks pilgrim... Thanks for the shout out, lol. I do like buzzing around the bay and knowing I can get somewhere faster than I could bike!! Trust me, your set up will be hitting ludicrous speed (Spaceballs reference) soon. And we were going about 3-5 mph slower than I usually go, just one up. The boats are weight sensitive. Even with the 15, anyone heavier than Kate Moss will slow the boat down by at least 3 mph maybe more. Add in that slight chop and slowed us down a wee bit more, though some say their sib does better in a slight chop, mine is a mirror flat thoroughbred, lol. On calm days I feel like i'm riding on a giant skipping stone!!! Cool thing is soon enough there will be at least 2 15hp powered "Speed" demons (relative) on the bay. You will be ecstatic one up!

Glad you guys were able to get out. I wish I had come up. I have not been out on the chesapeake in 3 weeks. The weather wont cooperate. I still dont have a proper top for my boat. I hope to get out this weekend.
Btw: here is a solution for your power trouble. I run my air pump, gps/fishfinder off of a car jumper box. Cost me $40 at harbor freight.

You know I thought about one of those before I made my tool box set up. Some of them even have built in lights and radios now, lol. If my battery is toast (6 years of being treated like a deep cycle when you are not, lol) I may scrap the MK I tool box and look at the jumper box. Kill 3 birds as i'll have a jumper in the van!!!

Congrats! I have the 55 with the optimizer. I use it with my Mariner 4 and have a 115 ah battery from Costco which has juice for about 2 hours on 100 % throttle. The speed is initially 4.5 mph by gps and then drops to 3.xx with time as the battery drains. The maximizer is efficient and if you run the motor at 50-60 % you will get maybe 6-7 hours at the high 2 or low 3 mph. Even when all lights on the battery check lights are out you will still have some juice in the batt to go with low speed, but of course it is best not to drain a deep cycle batt and charge it ASAP. I have a 7200 noco charger which has an 7.2 A output, but a bit higher would be better, say 12-15 A charger.

Wow, such a big difference in price between the 50 and 55 right now on Amazon. 50 is 370 and 55 is 524 for the long shaft....

Yea price difference is mind boggling. The Kota is a back up when my 15hp force decides to punk out. I'm going to Walmart now and trying to decide between the 27 type or the 29. I might go for the 29 because I don't plan on buying 2 batteries as of yet

It is a 27. 115 A. 750 Marine cranking ampers, 600 Cold cranking ampers (coca). The Walmart ones may be a good deal too. IIRC they are 125 A. The price was very similar. I can't speak of the manufacturers though, I think they are different. I researched before getting the Costco battery, but can't remember any details.

if not bring your original flooring. We can take a look to see if there is an easier way to put it together and also if there is a way to protect the area that is chaffing.

Changed my mind - I am coming by boat. If I don't try it tomorrow, then when?! Should be fun!
I will use the free ramp on Parkers Creek, near Little Silver, NJ. To Jamaica bay it should be 15-16 miles. In the afternoon the wind is about 10 mph, which I hope will still let me return to the NJ side.

Woohoo!!! I like your style! I am just getting in so it's gonna be a rough day for me tomorrow.. I mean later today, but i'll manage. You'st got a PM form someone else who may be interested in joining on outings. That was pretty much my hope that we would compile a list of names/ contacts that we could call if we wanted to get out on the water and not always fly solo. I have enjoyed my outings with Weimed and there has been a definite exchange of information/ ideas. I really think we could start something interesting here. I am going to put the user names of people who have expressed interest. I'd like to sticky it to the first page of this thread but don't know how, lol. It would also be nice to take pics or videos at each outing. I imagine if we manage to have an outing of 4 or 5 guys, the pics of that many inflatables would be awesome and if we manage videos... even better. Those kind of pictures sell themselves and anyone watching from the sidelines might actually consider giving it a go.

Hey sinistre, I'm at a go for Monday. Got 6 on a stand by the door it won't see the closet yet. By the way I tried the anchor on my last outing. It refused to dig into floor by the bridge between 40 and 60 ft deep. The issue is I have to just chuck the anchor on, I cannot let it down slowly I have to mod my anchor for that. Lifting it was heavy as hell also but hopefully my mod will revolutionize our anchor controls

Re: Calling All New Yorkers!!!! Jamaica Bay Sib Fest???

Sounds like a plan. I'm just waking up (lol) from the aftereffects of my last outing (This AM) and partying last night. Haven't been sea sick for a while.. forgot how much fun it isn't, lol. I will try to post the pics and video as soon as my head is cleared of the remaining cobwebs. I got to meet smashed from NJ (ironic as I was only slightly post smashed (exaggerating-only a couple of drinks)). Very nice guy and I love his set-up! I love when I can "borrow" ideas from people or evaluate the performance level of my set-up by real life measure. As such, I think my bravo air pump is ready for an upgrade as his pump was faster and higher pressure! Was nice to actually see a real life true tohatsu 9.8 and 14ft SIB all at the same time! And absolute MEGA KUDOS goes to him for crossing our version of the English Channel. He motored out from Sandy Hook to Floyd Bennet Boat Ramp! W/O GPS no less. That was actually one of the other main reasons for wanting to get more guys together. In addition to learning things, our different experiences help to give us a better idea of the capabilities of the boats and the operators. As a result, I made it out well into the Bight. Fished the area around Breezy Point and not too far off from Coney Island flats, in conditions that weren't exactly conducive to that goal. Unfortunately, the fish were not cooperative.

Smashed, to the extent that i have anything to do with the fishing (used up all my credit with the fish gods, lol), I apologize for the fishing. I'd hoped to send you home with some fresh fillets from the NY side of the Bight. I know I didn't try the bottom fishing but in that area the bottom fishing really is a timing thing (if it's not the right time of year/ season, you catch shorts or nothing at all) and figured I'd troll until we lucked into some cocktail blues or schoolie stripers (for fun). At that point, we'd have the area narrowed down and could concentrate our efforts. As you know, that plan didn't pan out :(

BTW, i didn't forget the plan to swap out motors for a bit (still envious;)) but once we headed out to sea, there wasn't anyplace to reasonably do that swap (wouldn't even dream of trying to do that at sea, lol). Guessing next time will be your neck of the woods or some other place more sure fire until the bay lights up and take it on faith, it DOES light up, just a timing thing. Thanks again for everything, not the least of which is getting to meet another cool boater and upping my courage/ comfort ante. I seriously thought about heading down to Sandy Hook with you but thought better about the return trip. Under ideal conditions... it would have been a piece of cake!

Oh, BTW, don't think you are off the hook for an explanation of how you have your DIY wheels set up. I was absolutely gobsmacked (love that word) with the ease with which you removed and stored them underway!!! Bravo... Very well done sir!
