Calling all OMC Gurus!

Recently I read a post that had a method for checking WOT timing without running the engine. J.Reeves method sounds like the ticket for checking this but he informed me the motor I have('92 115Hp) has a "Quick Start" function which would not allow me to use this method. My question is two fold: 1: What is the quick start function and how does it work? 2: Is there a way to by-pass or disable this function so I can check WOT timing or is there another way it can be checked without running?

Hummm...I didnt think that motor had Quick Start. Look and see if your temp sensors (1 in each head) have 1 wire each or if one of them has 2 wires.<br /><br />I could be wrong -- wouldnt be the first time...

SF.....The Quick Start function is used to give easier and "quicker" starts when the engine is cold. When you first go out in the morining or whenever it's cold, and go through your start up procedure, Quick Start senses engine temp (I think) and advances the timing a couple of degrees to make for an easier cold start. I'm not sure if you can disable it, and also never thought about it interfering with the non running timing technique, but if Joe Reeves says it won't work that it's a safe bet that it won't. I'm sure he'll chime in at some point and let us know how it affects it, and a different procedure to use. I just recently got a motor with Quick Start and would like to know also.

Thanks for the replies. The temp. sensors only have one wire each. Is this and indication that ther is no quick start feature? The original problem is the motor was being run through the break-in period after a rebuild. The first three times out it ran great. The fourth time it had a hard time getting the boat on plane. You can move forward in the boat and it will get on plane and run great. It just has a hard time getting out of the water. Compression checks good and all cylinders are firing. Joe told me to check the firing strength(which I will do ASAP). I'm just trying to cover all of the based. When doing the setup I noticed the linkage will not return all the way home from WOT but it appears to be wear. I would like to check WOT Timing for peace of mind. May be heading in the wrong direction but at least I would know it had been checked. Sure would like to find a way to check it without screaming down the river with a timing light in my hand.

I think youre headed in the right direction. I would definately check the wot timing. If we dont have a test wheel we check it while the boat is still on the trailer. just back it down far enough to allow the prop to get to 5000 or so. <br /><br />However, we do set the initial timing as Joe describes and set it 4 degrees low. At idle we have the carb linkage disconnected and just pull the timing up. It should get real close but we always like to double check it under a load.
