When I bought my YAMMIE  3.0 I/O the service guy told me I had a redline of 4800 or 4900 RPM's.Well, after my repairs  last year the service guy did some "motor adjustments" and now my RPM's are hitting 5300 but my top end dropped from 50 to 48 MPH and I smell a lot of gas fumes.I was wondering if you or our plethora of experts could fill me in on what might be the cause(s) of this. Thanks in advance!!!!!

The first thoughts that I am having is: Did the propeller get changed or repaired?? Are you over trimming the drive and ventalating the propeller. The hull speed does sound high, that is fast for a 3.0L The motor realy does not need to run above 4,800 rpm's.

whiteboy...Sierra 16ft fiberglass bowrider L4-3.0 Ltr-130 horses.SHE WILL SCOOT!!!..............'Mastertech.......No prop change.I put my mark on the prop and other items before leaving for repairs. Also,I never use the trim because it makes the steering VERY STIFF.....Thanks for the replies.

Re: Calling Captain Ken!!!

sounds like you are out of the motor's power band with a 5300 rpms. There should be ways to get the rpms down without buying a new prop

Re: Calling Captain Ken!!!

Don't know what the guy did to get that much increase in RPMs without changing the prop. The max RPMs for that engine is 4600-4800. I'm trying to remember, when they worked on the outdrive, did they change the gears or was it just the bearings? If they did, then the ratio is off. That would account for the increase of RPMs and the decrease in speed.

Thanks for the comebacks guys.Ken>>I seriously doubt that there was any gear change(didn't see anything on the bill). Also they would have had to get the numbers from you. What I am wondering is what was done to the motor. Is a little motor tuning normally part of bearing replacement? Can the gears be put in differently to change the ratio?I am really not wise on this stuff. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!

I couldn't see any tune up that would result in that. I'm wondering if the speedo is reading correctly and you're really going faster than you think. Could be the engine was running crappy to begin with and they just reset the timing properly.

Good news!!!!!!!Just got back from a few(?)spins around the lake and DID get my 2mph back.Must have been a combination of mixed old and new gas and maybe a little stiff from resting all winter. As for the RPM,s>>    I must have been dyslexic that day because I'm running at 4700 at WOT.Thanks loads for all the input. You guys are the best!!!!!!
