Re: Calling coffee drinkers

According to Nicholson in the Bucket List, Kopi Luwak is the best. Anyone actually ever try this stuff? From Morgan Freeman's description about how it's made, I think I'd have to pass.

Is that the brand that involves cats?

Sounds like we have a few world class drinkers out there but just as important as the coffee is the coffee maker. What do you use?

Well, seems as tho ya hijacked me bmolcheny....I too was going to see what you brewmasters out there are using for both coffeemakers and water. I can tell you that in every Starbucks store is installed a $15k rev. osmosis water filter. I used to do security work in their stores, and they had some customers who would bring their own jugs in and have them filled with water!
The managers at these stores always said it was the most important peice of equipment they had. Also, their coffee makers operated at a very high temperature as the water hit the grounds. Took a few minutes to cool off enough to serve.
One of the reasons I was going to ask, is that my old Cuisenart has about given up the ghost and I am in need of another maker. I can also tell you, there is so much lime and calcium in Florida water I cant seem to filter it good enough. I buy bottled water and use that.

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

We bought a Keurig individual cup brewer using Green Mountain coffee and water from our reverse osmosis filter on the dispenser on the kitchen sink. A fresh cup every time. A little pricey, but if you're a coffee lover, it's worth it.;)

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

I have had more different varieties of coffee than I can count.
Bout 20 years ago my father in law tried to convince me to open a little shop and sell nothing but different flavors of coffee..go figure I told him, yes I really did tell him he was nuts. (he also had a hairbrain idea about recycling plastic. the man was ahead of his time. RIP Larry)
Any way I like mine quick and hot don t wanna wait for it I take Folgers instant and its fine for me.

For regular coffee at home we have used Krups coffee makers for a long time. I recently bought an Imusa stovetop expresso maker for the boat. Around $20 at Walmart. BTW it makes great expresso!

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

I'm more of a coffee snob than most are. About 2 years ago I began to roast my own beans. Once you taste the freshness of a bean roasted "last night" you will never go back to anything else. I am to the point now where I use a manual drip brewer with water that is filtered and heated to exactly 205F. I sell beans locally to friends and family. I call it Just Born Java. It has a born-on date (the day I roast it) and I only guaranty freshness for 7 days from that date.

PM me if you would like to try the freshest coffee known to man. I only sell single varieties of beans. No blends, no Columbian crap. I prefer Kenyan coffees or Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. I buy a lot from a particular region and that is what I have until it's gone. Right now I have a Kenyan AA Fancy and boy howdy is it good!

I prefer the 100% Kona whole bean, in medium roast.
The Molokai blend is good too.

Fresh from the island, roasted to order.

Sometimes I will mix 1/3 blend of 8 o'clock Colombian for a change of taste.

The 100% Kona is very smooth and rich, low acid. Not bold. But it goes down way to easy. You won't get the jitters, but if you drink too much, you will soon realize that your brain is bouncing off the inside of your skull.

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

kona is a fantastic mid priced coffie....one of my favs....when jamacan blu mtn isnt around....

as for the coffie maker.....the standard home brewer does not get the water hot enough for a professional cup of coffie...it needs to be over 200 deg...

if there is a resturant auction around you....a commercial bunn coffiemaker can be had for 40 bucks.....

as for the water.....r/o water is preimum....espically if you cant boil the water...but bottled makes for an expencive cup o joe.....

this is what i used to suggest to coffie connasurers who wanted super home coffie.....

1. find your fav flavor.....each to his or her own...
2. get beans and fresh grind if you can
3. get a dual burner coffie maker that will heat the water over 200 deg..210 is great. (the water will cool slightly when it drips to the coffie bin)
4.if you can ger r/o installed in your house do it.....

5.(MOST IMPORTANT) once you have your coffie maker...(even if its a single heater with tap water)....get a big ol can of your fav coffie...and experiment...make a full pot....adjust the amount of coffie you use....drink a cup...and throw the pot away...then make another, again adjusting the amount of coffie for stregnth....repeat till its just the way you like it !

btw....the permanant coffie filters....add a funny taste...so i prefer paper.

cheers

Bunn has a home version of their commercial units and it's about the only drip machine that heats the water to the proper temperature. In Canada they sell them at Tim Hortons for $125. Sounds like a lot but once you try it there's no going back to the run of the mill Drip machines. Does a complete 10 cup pot in 3 minutes, and it's hot.

Amen brother. Can't say I have ever heard this statement from too many other people. You , my friend, know a good cup of joe. You MUST try beans roasted hours ago. You'll never go back.

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

I can appreciate a good cup of coffee, but for my every day swill it's Folgers ran through my 14 year old Black&Decker space saver w/brown paper filters and tap water. I like it black and stronger than most people. Mrs. i386's Dad is a truck driver and he has to water my coffee down.:D

The good stuff wouldn't be special if I drank it every day. Anything ground right before it's brewed is pretty good. I would imagine fresh roasted is even better.

Yeah D......the one and the same. Can't imagine anyone drinking that stuff after knowing how it's made. Although I sure gotta laugh watching the movie when Freeman described to Nicholson how it was made...........had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. :)
