Hey Jeepster,
I was looking at your project photos and noticed that your steering set-up is similar to mine. I have a '64 Evinrude V4 and the steering rod is attached with a small bolt that's loosely attached to the handle across the front below the cowl. Is there supposed to be a ball joint type fitting to allow for movement?
Classicboater

Thanks Jeepster, I tried to post a photo but I wasn't able to do it right. I'll try again with a close-up of my motor. For now here's the photo I tried to post last night.Motor Photo

Re: Calling The Jeepster

I think the typical arrangement is to have a 90 degree bracket mounted to the front of the motor, and then to mount a ball-socket type swivel joint on the end of your steering cable rod. That gives it flexibility, and doesn't wear out the joint/connectors. Having a loose bolt provides the flexibility and likely works, but will experience wear and lead to fatigue of the parts. I'd take a picture of my Evinrude mount for you, but the boat and motor are 5 miles apart from each other at the moment. All I could show you would be a photo of the 90 degree bracket on the motor I have here at.

[edit] corrected extremely poor spelling and clarified wording. :)

Classicboater, among my old boatstuff there is a bolt with a ballhead, thread looks like it fits those motors. I dont have the part for the steering cable though. I can take a photo, and possibly send the bolt to you if you like ?

Thanks G DANE, my e-mail is semenuk1@hotmail.com. Were you going to send the bolt or a picture of the bolt? It's a long throw across the pond. If you have a photo I'm sure I can find the part at a dealer or bone yard.
Classicboater

Re: Calling The Jeepster

I checked out the motor and its just connected via a loose bolt to swivel on. Now im concerned this was just rigged up by the last owner.
Would Someone send photos of how it should be connected.

Re: Calling The Jeepster

G Dane, did you send a photo of the steering connection bolt? Sounds like me and The Jeepster both need one. I'm out of the water until May 2005 so I've got time to get one.
Classicboater
