cam oiling wick

I see in the TOP SECRET FILE a picture of the oil wick but I can't see how to install one. I've only worked on 3 motors but have never seen an oil wick on any of them. Is it something everyone doesn't replace or did I just miss seeing them on the motors I've worked on? THANKS for any help! JIM

Hey Jim,
I seen a few people looked at your post but no answers.. I can't figure it out either (if folks on here want really challenging questions, super easy ones, or more detailed info!)... anyways, what motor are you working on?

I have a 60's 40hp with an under flywheel magneto and the wick is attached to a little clip UNDER one of the coils... just had to simply remove coil to access the wick clip. Also just a funny fact... I found the exact same wick from lawn boy (OMC owned lawn boy for awhile).

Good Luck

I've been working on '56, '57, and '58 Johnsons from 18HP-35HP

That should be it then. The wick slides into the wick clip but you cannot get it in unless you remove the coil because it bunches up and won't push in otherwise (you have to slide it in from the bottom of that little clip and then remount the clip). The wick should lay on the crankshaft coating it with oil as it turns (insert the long end into the clip... it protrudes about 1/2" and touches the crank).

Like this:
But the wick is often missing because some genius decided it isn't neceessary. Best to use a new (pre-lubricated) wick. Do not add any more oil to it.

I assume the wick is the fiber thingamabob that comes bubble packed with the points. Mine are safe in the draw with other misc. parts. Thanks I'll take a look at my motors. JIM

Be aware that some of the wicks come a bit extra long. They'll extend under the rubbing block area of the adjacent points if you're not careful. To the left in F_Rs picture there. I just snip a bit off.
