cam shift control positioning

I have a 1984 75 hp 2 stroke mercury outboard and i am rebuilding the lower unit bc it stripped the forward gear. now that i am putting it back together i cant get it to go into any other gear than forward. i have a couple questions about how the shift control is supposed to work. i can see it has three ledges i'm assuming the first is forward where it is stuck and the second is neutral and the third is reverse. But the pin can only make contact with the forward position before it hits the back of the gear. so is the shift control supposed to have a 360 degree of rotation on that model?

No it doesn't spin 360, but if you installed the cam upside down, it isn't going to work very welll

To be correct the cam is what pushes the spring loaded pin right. And thats the one part i didn't take out. is it supposed to be hitting the back of that gear? i can see three ledges but two of them are behind that gear in the picture and i dont understand how they would push the pin back any further then first gear?

That cam rotates to push the pin / clutch dog.-----If it is not assembled properly it will not work as you have found out.

With the Lower-unit in a vise on workbench (clamped down on the Skeg) have the shift-rod positioned with the beveled edge showing, slide in the assembly & secure

thats what i have been doing and getting the same results. my question is the cam can make contact with the pointer for forward gear but it cannot go into neutral or reverse bc it seems to be hitting the back of that gear. is this normal? i would think that cam should rotate till its in line or pointing to the propellor shaft to be in reverse? is that right? I tried to search everywhere for it but i couldnt find one that talked about one hitting the back of the gear. i appreciate the help
also if someone has a picture of how the cam is supposed to look inside i would really appreciate it, i cannot seem to find one picture where the forward gear is in place and being able to see the cam.

From your picture the cam is reversed...steps supposed to be on right side so flip cam over...Did you reshim new/used gear???

Would the shim material have compressed and made the gear come far enough back to allow the cam to hit the back of the gear?

Shims don't compress.
So which parts did you change?
