Look at the marine cams from Comp Cams. Go for one of the smaller ones. That second cam would most likely suck water on a 305. The first one is too small in my opinion. A good cam can make a fairly big difference and power don't cheap out on one. You can have a good Comp hydraulic cam with lifters for less than $200 shipped.

What would you suggest as far as a good size to use?

You can call most cam mfg's direct and give them your application, they will be the most qualified to tell you which of their profiles would work best in your situation....and they are only too happy to do it since it is their reputation. Or you can go back to the original cam as you know that one worked well.

Sorry man, but two of the most UNKNOWLEDGABLE people I've spoken with were reps from comp cams last year. Neither knew squat aobut marine cams. the guy at Crane wasn't a lot better.

that being said, the comp marine cams are a pretty safe bet in a near stock engine.

are you putting mostly stock parts beck on it/ compression ration close to stock? intake? etc... lots of variables
Actually, the smaller one is right in the range recommended for modified 305 engines in dennis moors book. not the end word, but a reasonable source of information as a starting point.

this one is probably a good option if we're talking stock or close with an intake, carb and cam...

Thats the cam I was going to recommend. I think it would work great on a close to stock 305.

I'm not claiming to know anymore than anyone else though.......

The first cam mentioned isn't much bigger than the stock Mercruiser cam. It's a little small on lift. The duration at .050 is in line on what would work but the opening rate is kinda wimpy. Check out the adv duration to the .050 duration and compare to the Comp Cam. I just don't think it would make power too well.

The cam tech lines anywhere don't know marine stuff too well. Summit is okay but still not a big help. I tried Cp Performance but they are more geared to higher performance stuff and don't do much close to stock.

I would look into a custom cam. Jay Allen from Camshaftinnovations.com could set you up with cam that would perform great.

Another custom cam guy is Bob Madara from Marine Kinetics(585-654-8583). He comes highly recommended from several high performance forums.
