Can’t get boat running.

I have a 97 Bayliner with a 90hp Mercury Force Engine. Bought it 3 weeks ago. Last week it started and ran for about a half hour.

Turned it it off and it would not restart. I took the motor cover off and although it would try to crank it was very labored in its effort. The starter was never falling back to it’s down position. The starter also started smoking.

Today I replaced the starter with a new one. It started on the first try. I shut it off to restart. Now the starter gear was spinning and staying in the down position.

I thought it was my quicksilver throttle that was very stiff. Last week it was wanting to grind gears going into reverse. (I avoided this.)

My Throttle only button would not pop off. It broke while taking it out. Took the handle off the throttle. It was stiff but seemed to be shifting in and out of gear.

After reading some posts I started checking my electronical connections for a bad connection. The battery cables looked new. I took the starter back out and cleaned the wire attached to it and to the motor. I put it all back together again.

Now the starter is not spinning and all I get is a click sound. I am taking the starter back out and replacing the wire connector. Even though I cleaned it I was afraid the wire could have a problem that was covered in plastic.

It this his does not work, I don’t know what to do.

With the throttle only button broken, I have stuck an Allen wrench in the hole for throttle only.

That would not keep keep it from starting would it?

Please help. Thanks!

You probably thought that buying a boat would be 'fun' :)

You say that you only got 1 start out of a new starter? Not sure the throttle would be related to it. Seems like separate issues. Check to see if there is a solenoid for the starter, as that may be the issue.

Sounds like a bad ground to me, I would be checking that first. As for the starter gear not coming up just staying down, lots of times the shaft needs a little grease. Even a new one that has been sitting on the shelf for a while can act up.

IS the battery good? Has it been load tested?

Try using jumper cable from battery + directly to starter.

And yes, check ground connections from engine to battery.

Very good advice from all of you...this is new to me. I did try the new starter by connecting straight to my cars battery. (It was inside and it was raining.). The bendex was not going up on the shaft. I took the bendex off and cleaned and greased it. It was still sticking.

I compared this to the old starter. The new one is crap. Looks like a bad knock off and design. It sticks when I spin with my hand and clean. I will have to order a new one.

I will get a new grounding wire when I order the starter.

I will also order a couple throttle only buttons.

Hopefully, all will work. If not then I will run a jumper cable fro the boat battery to the starter to check it’s power.

If still issues, I understand it could be a selinoid (sp).

Will keep my eye on the throttle arm although it sounds like a separate issue.

Thanks again! I will keep all of you posted.

Oh boy are you going to hate boats before it is over. Not to be negative but buy a manual you will need it.
