I have a 97 Bayliner with a 90hp Mercury Force Engine. Bought it 3 weeks ago. Last week it started and ran for about a half hour.
Turned it it off and it would not restart. I took the motor cover off and although it would try to crank it was very labored in its effort. The starter was never falling back to it’s down position. The starter also started smoking.
Today I replaced the starter with a new one. It started on the first try. I shut it off to restart. Now the starter gear was spinning and staying in the down position.
I thought it was my quicksilver throttle that was very stiff. Last week it was wanting to grind gears going into reverse. (I avoided this.)
My Throttle only button would not pop off. It broke while taking it out. Took the handle off the throttle. It was stiff but seemed to be shifting in and out of gear.
After reading some posts I started checking my electronical connections for a bad connection. The battery cables looked new. I took the starter back out and cleaned the wire attached to it and to the motor. I put it all back together again.
Now the starter is not spinning and all I get is a click sound. I am taking the starter back out and replacing the wire connector. Even though I cleaned it I was afraid the wire could have a problem that was covered in plastic.
It this his does not work, I don’t know what to do.
With the throttle only button broken, I have stuck an Allen wrench in the hole for throttle only.
That would not keep keep it from starting would it?
Please help. Thanks!
