Can 165 & 3.0 swap?

This may seem like an odd question.. but, if you have a boat that has the Mercruiser 165 MCM (4 cyl), is it possible (or a lot of work) to swap it with a 3.0 liter? Would you want to? I’m under the impression that the 3.0 liter is a better engine than the 165. They don’t manufacture the 165’s anymore do they? So, if the 3.0 isn’t a better engine, I would think that parts would be more available.

It would also require a gear ratio change in the upper gearcase, the 165 was a were good engine, it was a case of GM stopping manufacture of it

I think he has the "other" 165. The 4 cylinder one.

Your gear ratio would lend itself better to a V6 swap... The 3.0 would be a step backwards in HP

Yes the 4cyl. 165 has Ford, TRW and Mercrusier parts all in it when it first came out I wasn't to bad but the years and corrosion have turned most into junk

That's why I was wondering how difficult it would be to convert into a 3.0. Are the rear mounts the same? Are the front mounts the same? I don't know anything about the 165 setup, but have seen some boats for sale (non-running) with a 165

cptkid570,.........

The 165 that you're talking about is Known as the Mercruiser 470,.........Actually,... It's got Lots of Names,......
But,.... Everybody "In the Know",... Knows What the 470 Is.......
Ya gotta Quit calling it a 165,..... There was Also a Chevy based 6 cylinder motor by That Name..........
It's a motor built by Mercruiser using Some Ford pieces,+ the rest is Merc.'s Own............

Other than the fact that the 470,+ the 3.0l Both have 4 cylinders,+ Both say Mercruiser on them,........

They have NOTHING in Common.............

As stated above,..... The 3.0l is a BAD Swap......
The 4.3l is a Much Better Swap,.........
But,........ You'll Still end up Pulling All of the existing Motor,+ Throwing it Away.........
Then you can drop in a Complete 4.3l Engine Package...............
The Only Salvage you have is the Drive,+ Transom Assembly.................

Good Luck........
