I have a 97 Sea Ray SunDancer 250 with the 5.7 EFI and was wondering if a fuel flow monitor can be added? If so, What is involved? Is it just an in-line thing?

Anyone have any reccomendations?

Thx.

You can do additional researh via yahoo or google. You need to have one calibrated for the ammount you are capable of burning. Most use a venturi that has to be sized correctly. Also for fuel injection you need something that can take the fuel returned to the tank into account.

Be sure you have a panel hole for mounting it.

I've purchased a Faria Fuel Manager from iboats to install in our boat .... haven't started the install but have read and reread the instructions .... I know I shouldn't say so prior to doing so but it looks to be a pretty straight forward project

I don't believe there is a return line but will look into it.

Garmin also has one, if you have one of their NEMA 2000 chart plotters.

Re: Can a fuel flow monitor be added?

LK,

I installed a Navman Tracker 5500 system on our twin engine Chris Craft. (see avatar) The system mounts on the dash board and a fuel sensor accessory is a feature of this GPS chartplotter system. Both of the engines have a flow meter that are installed in the fuel lines that exit the fuel tanks. I installed the sensor in a vertical portion of the fuel lines as they approaches the engine. The sensor is a miniature turbine that spins as fuel flows through the flow meter. They recommend that the sensor be installed downstream of a 5 or 10 micron fuel filter.

I have been using the system since Spring of 2006 without any need for calibration. It appears sufficiently accurate for our use and predicts fuel use per mile and totalizes fuel use for both engines. Biggest installation problem was running the sensor wires from the engine compartment up to the GPS head. My engines are 5.7 liter Volvo Pentas and are fuel injected without any fuel return lines.

I don't think Navman is currently being sold in this country but they also offered a stand-alone fuel flow meter seven years ago when we purchased the system.

Best wishes in getting a system operating in your boat. It certainly helps in finding the "sweet spot" for max fuel economy.

I have a Garmin 182C Chartplotter - I will need to look in the manual about adding this option, I am thinking it's a no-go but you never know.

Can a gauge jsut be added in the dash?

So, reading the above, and assuming i wanted to install a similar fuel management gauge on my consol, i would also need to install a fuel flow transducer to the fuel line - correct?

Correct. Unless you have a head unit that is NMEA2000 equipped. Such as a Garmin or Lowrance GPS. Then all you need is a flow sensor.

There is no way to measure fuel flow without adding a flow sender to the fuel line. ***
All the systems do the same.
The Faria Fuel Monitor INCLUDES the Sender.

*** Other than extracting the info from the Fuel Injector Computer. Very Problematic.

Floscan for one has the complete installation instructions available on their website, you can read step by step what installation would entail. Very likely the other brands have similar information. I find this type of thing extremely useful, being able to review installation or owners manuals prior to buying something.
