can a mecanic rebuild a lower unit

150 evinrude xp he wants 800 for my lower unit to be rebuilt can he do that or does it need to be sent out.or do u think that is a used one thanks

gear cases are rebuilt all the the time.and 800.00 sounds right there.if you think it's used ask.but what kind of mechanic you didn't say.

There are specialized tools needed to do that right so if the guy is/was an OMC/BRP mechanic ya and $800 seems like a good price.

Just a gear set for my 50 is $250 so alot of your money is going just for parts.

If you don't want it fixxed right now check out Ebay, they always have alot of lowers for a good price, got my current one there and have run it for 3 years no problems.

Rebuilds are common, but for that much scratch I'd get a specific list of what is going to be rebuilt/replaced. Seals? Shafts? Gears? Bearings? Clutch Dog? Water Pump? Know what you are paying for and getting...even if the guy is family.
