I am thinking of trading my dodge ram for a jeep cherokee. The jeep is lifted. (truck is too, but my eye is on a more family friendly vehicle trade)

Can it be de-lifted - preferably DIY? I see lift kits online so I assume this is something anyone could handle - but maybe not? How can I tell or what do I ask to find out?

I am mechanically inclined so I think I could tackle the project unless special tools (i.e. expensive) are required.

thoughts?

well - let's move the context to my truck, since I am more familiar with that.

the answer is still 'i don't know?' - the springs on my truck - well, "look rusted enough" to look like they are stock - and I kind of felt the oversized tired on the truck is what gives the appearance of a lift.

i really don't know - what should i look at to figure it out?

To answer your question, yes, a lift can be removed. I'd suggest you take a look at lift kits on autoanything.com or on some of the Jeep sites. You can see what parts are included and look under the Jeep to see if there are any aftermarket parts on it. Also, look for names like ProComp, Rough Country and any other number of manufacturers that make lifts for it. I am part of a truck forum, but am not familiar enough with Jeep lifts to give you an idea. I believe the stock tires on the newer Jeeps are 35". Anything bigger, and it's probably, though not definitely lifted.

On the 1984 to 2001 XJ, it is a unibody vehicle. No body lift "lift kits.
Lift is achieved via new springs and/or spring spacers.
Radical lifts will include new front suspension arms and links to get the geometry back to near stock, etc.
One way to reverse a lift is to advertise in Craigslist.
There is always someone (usually young) that wants to lift the same model Cherokee.
Perhaps you can workout a suspension swap with someone.
Or go to a u-pull it grave yard and start wrenching.

Of course it can.

Be ready for:

1. Replacing every U Joint.

2. Brake/fuel line "engineering". I don't envy you on this one. Anything you do will be a "cobble". Unless, you have OEM parts purchase reciepts.
