I'm almost doing the same thing.

the 290 and 280 are virtually the same EXCEPT for the transom plate and the trim. You cannot use the transom plate.

What I was going to do is just use the whole drive (upper, intermediate, and lower) and just switch trim/steering assemblies that are on the intermediate. Turns out you really can't do that.

So, what I'm doing is using the upper and lower gear housing from the 280 and putting them on my 290 intermediate with the trim/steering assy. already on it. Have to worry about re-shimming the bearings when you do this though. If everything else is good on your drive, I'd just use the lower temporarliy until you can get another 290 DP. I see DP on ebay all the time, seen 2 go for less than $800

I've found out Volvos are a PITA when needing servicing

Why don't you post a pic of the crack.

You could also pick up a junk 280, and just swap out the housing, as long as your internals are good. Or you could look for a used DP with correct gear ratio, or a single prop 280 lower would go right on and use that. Keeping the DP would be nice. Much better performance, so I've heard.

As PowerAddict mentioned, you'd also have to re-shim if you do any of the above.
