Can an additional fuel filter be added?

Considering all the "paint" problems from the fuel pump can a second fuel filter be added after the fuel pump in the line that feeds the fuel rails? I was thinking about a high pressure filter with AN type fittings. The dealer won't do it because of any legal liability reasons I would like to do it so when the pump goes out again the trash won't go into the injectors. I can replace the fuel module myself but I can't clean the injectors. Just trying to be pro-active on this problem.

The problem is the paint plugging up the pump. So putting a filter after will be of little help.
Best thing to do if you aren't having problems is take the filter off and check your filter and see if the area inside is painted. That's where the paint comes from.

Besides, you don't even want to mess with the pressure hoses on the fuel rails.

Thanks for the quick reply.
In my sututation the paint actually passed through the pump and plugged the injectors. That is what I was hoping to prevent in the future.
Does anyone know has Volvo corrected the problem yet?

Get rid of ALL the paint in the filter housing, then it can't happen again. You DO NOT want to be splicing in fuel filters into a high pressure line. Talk about a fire and explosion hazard

Point well taken, thanks. I just hate to take apart a brand new $800.00 pump assm. not knowing if it is even painted or not.

Just pull the filter off and look where the filter attaches.. That's where the paint comes from, there isn't any paint inside the fuel cell.

Re: Can an additional fuel filter be added?

I took my old unit apart and I had paint blisters inside the round can that has the return line connected to it. I don't know what it is called but water circulates around the outside of it and it has some type of float valve inside of it. It's about the size of a beer can. It was painted on the top inside of the cast metal. I think it is some sort of return fuel container.

I will try to post pic this PM.
After looking further I do have blistered paint on both the area where the filter attaches to the unit and in the top of the fuel cell. It seems that only the upper cast metal parts are blistered the sides and the bottom plate (which is the same type of metal) have no signs of paint failure.
