OK, I almost hate to even post this question because I just dont this it's possible.. but here it goes.
I have twin OMC Cobra 5.7 on a Four Winns 285 Vista, 1989. Two seasons ago, I needed to replace my port side outdrive. I could not find a CR outdrive, so I replaced it with a standard rotation drive. The boat runs fine cruising, but I have trouble sterning into my slip because when spinning to port, the boat tends to glide because both props are spnning the same direction.
Anyway .. I have been living with it for two seasone, until a conversation with a member of my boat club told me that with the OMC, you can move adjust the shift lever in the drive, to move the opposite directions effectively giving counter rotations (as long as I change the prop).
Although this makes sense, it begs a couple of questions. #1; Is this even possible. #2; Can the gears handle running basically backwards at high speeds (I know this is possible with Volvo drives).
Has anyone heard of doing this? I have a feeling its not this easy, as that would mean its an inexpensive fix (basically the cost of a CR prop)... and with boating, the only two things I'm positive about are that things are never easy, and never cheap!
