Ten,
I think you're right. Maybe not an 18 but the design on the side of the cowl (hard to pick out in the picture) does look like a late 50's Johnson. Definately repainted though.
Thanks

That sure looks like a '58. The 'control panel' in '57 and '56 was mostly white, and in '58 it was half in half with Holiday bronze (the red colour). And Holiday bronze was only used from '56-58. So unless the panel has been changed...
'56
'57
'58

Paul,
I was looking at the same site and have decided 58 too.

Ten,
I don't have any info besides that picture so far. Just trying to figure out what it is for a friend.

biscuits,
That paint job does resemble the old Merc green so good guess anyway.

Re: Can anybody ID this motor?

I'm betting it's a 10hp model.

Two things - first, the front of the cowling on the 18hp has a ridge that runs between the top edges of the side wings to give the illusion that it continues across.

Second, the slight flare at the base of the cowling to accomodate the belly pan gasket. The original clamshell cowling 10hp had no base gasket. Rather than start from scratch, they altered the cowling design to handle the rubber gasket, hence the flaring at the base. I don't think the 18hp has this flaring...

Show me a pic of the intake ports and I can tell you for sure... The 10hp has port covers that are NOT symetrical when viewed horizontally. The port covers on the 18 are symetrical when viewed horizontally.

- Scott
