Re: Can anyone help with my wiring 82-84RUDEV4

Okay, I have finally started wiring up my boat, much to both my wifes and my neighbours pleasure after 4 years on the driveway. I have rebuilt the transom, fitted a motor, built a console, fitted the throttle and all the cables. Pictures will follow as soon as the wiring is complete. Thanks to all those who have helped me under both the logins I have used (Johnny_boy/John the landlubber) WITHOUT YOU GUYS I WOULD HAVE GIVEN UP YEARS AGO!!!!!

Re: Can anyone help with my wiring 82-84RUDEV4

I have succesfully figured out the wiring for the new 6 gang switched fuse board to run my VHF/Fishfinder/Gps/Horn/3000 GPH pump. I am having some problems though with the Ignition and battery circuits though, and although I think I know where the final wires go, I am looking for some confirmation before finally powering up, since I dont want to risk melting the harness.

I Have a 4 position ignition switch which does not have the traditional markings for the terminals. Instead it has 2 single large terminals (marked 2 & 3) and one large terminal with a smaller raised terminal (marked 1).

I'll deal with the large terminals first. I have connected the Black/Yellow wire to the large terminal marked 1. I have connected the Violet/White wire to the large terminal marked 2. I have connected the Yellow/Red wire to the large terminal marked 3.

IS THAT RIGHT SO FAR???

Now we come to the smaller raised terminal marked 1. I believe a wire should go from here to my dead-man lanyard, which is the type that makes a connection when the lanyard is removed. It has 4 terminals on it marked C - M - C - M.

HOW DO I WIRE THIS IN PLEASE?

Then I have some wires left from the harness being the:-

Brown wire (I think this goes to the battery negative and is for the engine temperature alarm)

Black wire (I think this goes to the battery negative)

Red/Violet wire (I think this goes to the battery positive)

Blue wire (I believe goes to the tachometer, which I have fitting instructions for!)

That completes my many questions for the igniton wiring. Now I have a couple of questions on the battery and starting circuits.

I know I need to buy some big cables from an automotive dealer to start the motor.

Do I need one long red wire (thick) to go from the battery positive to the solenoid or starter motor somewhere?

Do I need one long black wire (thick) to go from the battery negative to the solenoid or starter motor?

And finally, my battery switch. I am intending to install a second battery as a backup and to operate an electric trolling motor. My switch has 1,2 & shared marked on the terminals. Do I simply connect the battery 1 positive wire to the post marked 1, the battery 2 positive wire to the post marked 2, and battery 1 & 2 negative wires to the post morked shared???

What type of cables do these have to be, and do I have to set the switch to both to charge the batteries when the engine is running???

Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks MBG but I'm too far down the road to change the whole system and start again, not to mention the cost of buying all the stuff again. Looks like nice stuff to use though. I just need some final clarification on where these wires go, then she's good for a trial. I have found out how to work the battery switch and wire the two battery's and I have e-mailed the manufacturer for instructions that go with my durite ignition switch. I think that the main thing i'm still stuck on is where I have to route big cables for the starter circuit and the last few wires in the harness.
