Can anyone tell me how many ozs of oil a 40 hp johnson lower end takes

Seems like I drained out more than a could get back in??? Just about 4 ouces less. Any help is appreciated. Sorry I'm new to the board. If any responses please please shoot me an email. Thanks, Jason.

Thanks 4 the response. It is a 1992. I filled it from the bottom till it ran out the top. Got about 9-10 ozs in it but about 14 ozs came out?? Is this enough for atleast one trip. I'm leavin at 5:00 in the mornin. Thanks again. Jason.

Im pretty sure that model takes 16 OZS to fill.

Did you do it slowly, allowing any and all air to escape? Did you use the pump, or squeeze the tubes? Using the tube method allows quite a bit to leak out. I prefer the pump with the adaptor that screws into the drain hole.

BTW, I hope you replaced the gaskets on the drain and vent screw while you did it. They are for a one time use only. You do not want water intrusion into your lower unit for the cheap price of them.

I used the the squeeze type. I will deffinetly use the pump next time. I just went back and tried to add more oil. It comes right out the top hole like it is full. I will use it 2morro and replace and try the pump. Thanks for your help.
