Can anyone tell me if this Johnson 70 is a long or short shaft from the pics?

I'm thinking about going to buy it. Owner has no idea and isn't very helpful. I don't want to drive all the way up there and find out its a short shaft that won't fit my boat.

It looks like a short shaft but the model number would verify that. See if you can get the actual model number off of it and that will verify whether short or long. Should be a manufacture plate on the front with the model and serial numbers.

Just hold a tape measure on top of the cavation plate and see if the top board on the stand is close to 20 or 25 inches

Long shaft (20" transom). No measurement needed. The short shaft (15") had only about 2 inches between the lower shock mounts and the upper AV plate ridge. The short shaft model is uncommon, and in that vintage would have been bright orange and labeled "Stinger"... A general rule for that vintage is that all Johnson 3-cylinder 65, 70 or 75hp short shafts were Stingers (but not all Stingers were short shafts.)

very easy to tell, like the above said, very small space between cav plate on a 15 inch short shaft.
this is definitely longshaft.
and looks in nice condition, if it runs like it looks then buy it and enjoy it.

Thank you chinewalker and phil. Just the type of expertise i was hoping for. Would you know if that era johnson had regular mechanical shifting or the hydroelectric?

I would say that is normal mechanical
But without seeing the engine front on and close couldnt be 100% sure.
Going by the lid i would say mechanical, and wouldnt touch it if its electric gearshift.
they were fine back in the early seventies, but i would think terrible to get parts now and the electrics would
probably need to be re-sealed and new parts now if not soon !!!!!!

if you get a manual shift your choice of spares is huge.
see if you can get a pic of under the hood on the right side on engine ,then its easy to tell.

It may be a hydromechanical shift or a mechanical shift. Depends on the model number. By the decals, your motor appears to be a 1975, which was the changeover year - some were hydromech, some were mech.

Hydromechanical was kind of an intermediate design between the electric shift and the straight-up mechanical shift. H-M came in on the 65hp in 1973 and was gone by 1976.

He said it's a '76. Hopefully it will be a regular mechanical shift. I'll see if I can check it out tomorrow. Thanks!
