I read somewhere that the only way a motor would throw white smoke is if it was buring water.

Where and how does the water enter the eingine and what do you check to fix it? Thanks in advance!

White snoke=steam. So make sure it's white first.Besides, hot exaust is mixed in the exaust port,so you might get get steam, and have it be normal.
The best way to determine if you have a problem,is to check the engine's compression. While you have the plugz out, note thier color. A beautifully clean plug means water in the combustion chamber (steam cleans the plug). If you have one or more very clean plugs, pull the exaust port plate first, and examine the gasket, and surfaces for signs of blow-by.
If none, it's time to attempt to remove the head to check it's gasket and surfaces for same. But use a low-torque impact wrench for this job,on any engine with many hours on it,especially on those used in salt water.
One has but to read the sad threads such as "BOLT BROKE OFF IN HEAD...HELP!!!!"
to scare them away from the task. Good luck.

Big ole Texas hiddy to ya Spur,
12Footer told ya right. If ya gotta take the head(s) off, soak tha head bolts real good with a good penetrating oil like Kroil, Liquid Wrench, etc. NOT WD-40. WD-40 iz great 2cycl. starting fluid but shiddy penetrating oil.

g'luck & c/6

hooty
