Can charging the batteries while they are connected possibly damage the rectifier on an outboard? I have done it that way for years but recently have had a damaged rectifier and I am looking for the cause..

Re: Can charging the battery damage rectifier

Never had a problem and haven't seen any cautions about charging marine batteries. Some older motors, however, shouldn't have maintenance free batteries installed. Not sure why, but I've seen that caution.

Just never reverse the polarity. Even a split second the wrong way can blow the rectifiers right up to the power paks.

Just take care of the polarity +/+ & -/-.
Personally i use a battery isolator to avoid any problems while charging the batteries. Also the battery isolator is very usefull when you´re running a stereo system, depth finder or other electrical instruments.
Have a good time!!
