Can i cut my transome?

MAJOR PROBLEM!! i need some good advice. i just found out that my 89 sea nymph needs to use a long shaft motor. problem is, i already have 3 short shaft motors and i'm not buying another one. what i need to know is, can i notch out the transome 4 inches then tig weld the aluminum back on to cover the wood inside? i know it can be done, but will it work w/o me and the boat getting soaked? i know i've seen aluminum boats w notches before so i assume this "rig" job would work ok? any experienced input would be appreciated. thanks.

Well, you could; lots of folks do, but it is not a good idea.

Convert one of your short shaft outboards to a long shaft.

jb, thanks for replying, but why isn't it a good idea? i'll still have roughly 17 inches of transome wall left. will i sink or is it cause i'll just get wet?

uhmmm...sell the three short shaft engines , and buy one that fits your transom.. no brainer here.... :cool:

Well........ isn't your boat aluminum?

What you are saying is that you have short shaft motor's and your boat requires a long shaft motor of 20"?

A few pictures and a better description would help. As far as I know the Sea Nymph takes a 20" shaft and depending on what you have for a motor may make it work.

There are extensions available to change a shaft length........

Bottom line ...... DO NOT CUT the boat!

ok, yes my boat is aluminum and requires a 20" shaft motor. i have 3 short shaft motors, all old and couldn't get much for them towards a new one. and i'm broke so i can't just buy a new one and i need it done by next week so i'm looking to notch it out. nor can i find and afford an extension. seems it'll work notching it out 3-1/2 inches. just wondered why everyone thinks its so bad to do? i'm a welder by trade so tig welding it back together wouldn't be hard to do.

You are a welder :)

Well...... weld yourself up a jackplate bracket and attach that to the transom. That will probably solve the problem That will allow you to get away with mounting a short shaft. Make your own ;)

Explain that. How? I have never heard of devaluing the HP rating. :confused: nor could I find any reference to it.

Tdoe,

Where are you located and what size motors are we talking about? Rather then cut your transom, maybe list what you have and look for a trade? I have 4 standard shaft motors (5, 7.5, 15 and 18) and am looking for a short shaft for my little 14 foot crestliner, I am in Reno, NV. if close, and we have comparable motors, we could talk a trade.
