Re: Can I DIE !!!!

going back to the original post...why THAT particular boat from FLA?
I would think you would be able to find something similar alot closer to your location.
If you do feel the need to go outa state for a boat, i would head up north to the great lakes or some other larger inland lake where a boat that size would have seen limited salt, and due to the long winters, less hours. just my 2 cents

lmao...I dont feel the need to "prove" anything on some discussion board. Does it really matter? Why would you possibly care?

Just another way of saying he can say anything because he doesn't care if it is truthful, means anything, or makes sense.
In other words he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him or his ideas.
His posts here mean nothing to him.
And they souldn't mean much to us either.

 And you arrived at THAT particular conclusion...how?

I have never posted anything but truth in any of my posts in any BB I have ever visited, and there are a few. On one, I have over 12k posts in a few years time. The people there know me well and know who I am. I have even met a couple of them in person.

No, I dont really care what anyone thinks of me, more or less, on a BB, and that goes for real life as well. Well, let me quantify that...I care so much as I wouldnt want anyone to flat out dislike me for them. My posts mean something to me, or I wouldnt post them. I can't vouch for anyone else.

If they dont mean anything to anyone else, just go past any response you see with my name on it. Simple.

In a nice way:D i think it is a bad idea to advise on trips you have NOT made other than general things like planing your fuel range and the saftey gear you have on board

My trips are limited to the Long Island area to Martha's Vineyard buy Sail and New London buy power

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

How did this get so out of control in this thread? ....

In opposite, I feel ganged up on thus far, calling me basically an idiot ... yet read through the thread for several instances thrown in my direction....

...I had up until this point thought this was a pretty cool discussion board. It is quickly turning into someplace I am thinking twice about visiting if views differing from the norm are going to be lambasted.

See what happens when you take the political threads out of DC????? Now we need to fight about whether to take a 25 year old boat from West Palm Beach to Texas ... :D

Were is that popcorn, this thread is getting fun! :D ;) :p

Hey QC, go get Boomyal and ob, then pull up a chair and let's have some fun! :D

Oh, and don't forget Ole' Merky, and might as well get Treedancer and Bro Haute while you are at it ... LOL!

If anyone needs to look in mirrors, it is by those who have posted such comments directed at me. I had up until this point thought this was a pretty cool discussion board. It is quickly turning into someplace I am thinking twice about visiting if views differing from the norm are going to be lambasted.

Dont go Bill I'm still with ya!:D I think Moterboat is right, your the first person in like a month that has said anything even remotely controversial. I think some of the others just snapped due to boredom. And I do agree I think some of the comments towards you were way way out of line.

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

I have read all the reply?s and I would have to say there is a lot of paining in such a trip. I have ask a REAL question here, and many of you did reply with your expert advice and wisdom. And ? NO? this is not a ? silly post? but a Heart felt one! Just how many times have you lay in bed thinking of some unbelievable adventure in you head, well I have been doing this for a long time, Don?t look like its going to happen any time soon now. But I will indeed read all the input on what to look for in such a task, all info is so worthy here . But at all means, don?t fight here, We all have our ways of ?life?, This was just a ideal ?.that I wanted to do, And now I want ? DIE?! Robert Dallas:)

I apologize for derailing your thread for any part I played in it. I hope you know I wasn't trying to do you any harm or steer you wrong by my thoughts on it.

I am sure in your years of all you did, there were nuts like me who would take precautions and then do something a bit, well, maybe "irresponsible" or seemingly absurd.

And above all, I am sure you wouldn't let one person or even a group decide ultimately in the end what you end up doing.

I probably also so have shut up a while ago:)

I am not usually that contentious, however I just dont want people telling me that I am wrong for being who I am and doing something like that, and as well, basically calling me a liar by the end.

Silly. It's a bulletin board.

ok here we go!
dallas:
The post was very well named. and the general consensus is ....YOU MIGHT!

as for the comments on this post
your right! This is a heart felt post! the people here are trying save your kids daddys life. you were in the army. the post by DMCB #50 looks like good human intelligence to me (humint?)

I think don s has the best approach to boating. im a firm beleiver in a grow with the waves type approach to boating.

and bill: you sound like a cool guy. come up to canada some time in the summer. a lot of NHL ers live here in the off season. (however one died on the lake in a boating accident.) we'll take my boat out in a storm some time and surf the six foot waves!

bill sorry you got attacked.
a fourm is supposed to be a discussion.
but i must side with the majority, those waters may not be the best to boat a first voyage!

dallas you be the judge!
cheers
OOPS!

Thanks! That does sound like fun! Of course, getting up there is a bit tough at this point in my life with the kids and work etc...But dont be surprised in years down the road if I take advantage of that ;-)

I will be in Montreal in April for some hockey tournament. Id meet you for a beer there if you are close by.

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

DallasB,

It's pretty plain to see that the answer to your question is: YES. Yes, you could die. Each way more horrible than the last.

That said, there's a lot of things that you can do to try to prevent it. The simplest thing would be to find someone else, who is experienced, that would make the trip with you - in another, fully trustworthy, boat. (Of course you should still stock up on all the safety gear mentioned by other posters, and that haven't been mentioned but that you can think of).

Let me ask you this question: are you *just* looking for a boat to have, or are you looking for an adventure (and the boat is 'enabling' this)?

lmao...I dont feel the need to "prove" anything on some discussion board. Does it really matter? Why would you possibly care?

For pretty much the same reasons that people do extreem sports. :)

Im 38 yrs old, and in case you didnt realize there are people out there who are into extreme sports and pushing limits for adventure, perhaps you should delve a bit deeper into life.

Some have good reasons, some have bad reasons. But all that is besides the point:

I suspect that you are not suggesting that DallasB go into things unprepared. All of your examples - snowboarding, surfing, hockey - seem to be in the order of 'pushing your personal envelope'. The point is that you are *pushing* an existing skill - I doubt that it was your first time on a snowboard, first time surfing, hockey, etc in the examples that you gave.

If that is true, then I can agree with your opinion. Just because there is risk dosn't mean you should dismiss something.

DallasB should take a cold hard *informed* look at the risks/costs involved in what he wants to do, -vs- the benefits that he will get. The acceptable balance can only be determined by him. Note that the equasion is fluid - risks can be decreased, benefits are really only 'estimated', and are often intangible.

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

Now for my final adventure...
This is a brokered vessel and Dealer makes no guarantees or warranties...

Here's what I take away from this discussion.
Two operative words: "final" & "no".

Doesn't sound like you can afford final anything with 4 kids home. And no guarantees or warranties is a pretty blatant warning of what's to come.

You sound like you've had enough life?s experience to know better than try this.

Trust me when I tell you an advertisement for an old turnkey boat rarely turns out that way. I've spent the past two months getting to know my old (1974 turnkey boat. Had it in the water 2 hours, it ran for 5 minutes, and I've been greasy for ~100 hours since. I'm having a blast...but there's nothing life threatening about it except telling my wife I'm heading to the barn to work on the boat again.

Take the advice of the other more seasoned salty dogs in this thread.

Tow the boat home, get to know her...inside and out, not just the deck chairs and you'll have a blast.
