Good on ya Dallas.
Hope we didn't discourage you from boating. It is a great sport best taken in smaller steps.
Luck to you.

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

I'm doing some extreme boating this weekend!! I'm going to launch the boat from the middle of the George Washington Bridge, and have the motor cranking by the time I hit the water a few hundred feet below. Should be good for a thrill or two.

Some general viewpoints, not necessarily directed at anyone in specific here:

Incompetence is not knowing your own limitations.
Stupidity is not even knowing you're incompetent.
Stupidity is what gets you in trouble.

Bravery is understanding the risks and limitations, and going forward anyway.

DallasB - kudos to you for wanting a boating adventure. Make sure you get one eventually, when you're ready. :)

Bill - kudos to you for making a stance for adventures in life, and for standing up to the onslaught of criticism here.

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

just read your article, and various heated replies......
I live on yhe south coast of England, no, not the gulf i know, but we still have seriously treacherous seas and storms that while not hurricane strength, can still snap a small boat in half in no time if you get it wrong.
obviously, you regard your time in the army as a kind of superhuman life-guardian, (i did my service as an RAF military police officer), and in the need for adventure you seem to be forgetting something,
when everything suddenly goes tits-up miles from shore, and this adventure suddenly becomes not so much fun, and even the bravest of us could be cowering in the wheelhouse desperately jabbing the DSC button on the radio and hoping someone can hear those magic words..'MAYDAY....',
What about considering the lives of those sent to rescue the inexperienced mariner who decided to take on such an 'adventure'?
your coastguard, and Britains R.L.N.I. Lifeboats, have to brave the very conditions you cant handle, putting their own lives on the line.
Get experience closer to home, venture out further as you learn to become a better mariner.

It's called necro-posting. :)

And by doing so it allows me the opportunity to state I wish I was here 2 yrs ago...we'd be making the trip, learning some things, drinking beers, connecting....

So, for any of you thinking of making a trip which you think impossible or sketchy for your level of experience, I say let's go. I'll show you the ropes and drink your beer. That's right, it's on your dime. This stage of my life my labor is free. And I can still swim circles around the young 'uns.

Re: Can I DIE !!!!

I think DallasR was being sarcastic when he asked the question Can I DIE.

It seems obvious that DallasR is not doing this because he hopes to be getting a good deal on a boat. Instead he seems to be looking for adventure. If he is doing this because he is looking for a deal on a boat, then of course he should not do this. Why would anyone travel over a thousand miles across the gulf for a $5,000 boat? He mentioned he has the money for a better boat that he can get in his home state.

If he is doing this for adventure, then it seems he has found an adventure that would rival his days in the military.

If you are still reading these treads and have not already taken the trip, then I say go for it DallasR. If I had the time and money I would probably do it also. Just make sure you bring a life raft. :D

Are my calculations correct? Because I figured it will cost over $5000 in fuel alone.

One of many statements that says you don't know what you are talking about because you can't do that.
You will be out of sight of land for many hours during this run.
Doug

Why? There appears to be plenty of water. He is going to need fuel every day. This isn't a passage making event. Loooking at the charts, the only thing I am not clear about ( and a call to the local Coast Guard would answer the issue ) is what are the safety fairways that seem to litter the coast.
I would not recommend taking an unknown craft into unknown waters on such a lenghty trip with the experience the OP has.
