Yup, no fun at all. I was about 11 at the time and the "offender" was a Johnson 28hp motor. It had neither a lanyard or a neutral safety switch. I was tossed out of the boat, hit and then hauled out of the water by a guy who saw the whole thing from a nearby marina. I had just refueled the boat there and it ran around in circles for quite some time (I don't remember at this point), afterwards.

Where would you be in a law suit when a lawyer said his client was told it would be OK to run the boat by a certified OMC mechanic?

In Alabama you can be cited for not wearing your lanyard whenever the outboard is running. I wear mine if the motor is running as well as my life jacket. Neither are a bother and both have been proven to save lives.

thats why i love this place. I will find a switch but where? i have looked on Iboats and found nothing. I will hold off on this weekend. thanks for everything guys.

You could get one at your local Evinrude dealer, no doubt, since it's from a 90s control. Or go here:

Where it shows Evinrude, drop down the list and select OB Accessories. Then pick the year of your control, or as close as you know. Choose the type of control in the next list, side mount, binnacle, etc. Then you'll get a parts list and exploded view of the control. Keep hunting 'til you find the one that looks like yours, unless you know for sure.

Locate the Emergency cutoff switch in the diagram, then in the parts list. You can order direct from that website or take the part number to your dealer. I suspect they used the same design of switch for several years in the 90s, so it shouldn't be too hard.
