can I easily swap an 850 with a 1150

I have a 1977 850 that blew just a cylinder. A friend of miine has a 1976 1150 in mint shape. My boat will handle up to a 150 hp motor. Both motor mounts look identical. The connections also look to be the same for these two motors. My question is it a simple switcharoo ? Does the throttle, tilt, gas and steering connections just unplug from one and plug into the other ? Will the elctrical plug work properly without any changes even though the old engine was a 4 cyl and the new a 6 cyl ?

Should be just plug n play, but compare the connections, count the pins on the plug, all that good stuff.

Visco, Those motors were almost identical, except for the two extra cylinders and one extra carb, and the obvious differences (dist .vs. distributorless ign.) The lower units, controls, props, trim/tilt, transom clamps, swivel bracket etc. are common. If you have the Distributorless ignition on your 85HP, you will need to check to assure the wiring harness will work. I would compare wiring diagrams to make sure. Specifically, on the 115HP, the white wire supplies voltage to the switchbox, when the ignition key is on. Make sure it has the same function oh your 85HP motor.

Gear ratios may be different in the lower ends. might have 2:1 ratio (14toothpinion/28tooth forward/reverse) in the 115 and a 2.3:1 (13tooth/30tooth) in the 85hp. Thus may have to change prop. Just a possibility.

I swapted a 85hp merc to a 150hp it went pretty easy but i got to tell ya there is a big weight difference from 85 to 150, I just about could not muscle the 150 on the boat good luck.

Thanks all for your input. I am going to have the 115 checked out by a mechanic and then I will make a decision. I might be better off just fixing my 85 hp motor, but it would be nice to have a little more horsepower on my 18' aluminum Starcraft.
