Can I install a Jet foot?

Ok so I have a potentially ridiculous question, but I have not been able to get a straight answer from anyone. I have a 1996 Crestliner Phantom 1850 (aluminum hull) with the extended transom and a Johnson 140hp V4. I have been looking into getting a jetfoot for awhile now. I know I will need to raise the transom about 6 inches and that I will lose some HP, but I am ok with that. My question is does the hull have too much V? I have read that ideally you want 10 degrees or less, but is that for the whole boat or just at the rear? I roughly figured it and at the very back there is right around 10 degrees give or take (if anything a little more). I have been told that with too much V the pump will cavitate. Also there is a weird step near the rear of the boat where the bottom stops about a foot before the top, so it has like an overhang. I don?t know if that would cause cavitation either. I know I will not have the maneuverability and speed anymore, but I really just want to be able to running the river without ripping the prop off. Any help or suggestions would be awesome! Thanks!

I did read that honest! But does the 6-10 degree mean for the whole boat or just at the transom? At the front of the boat it is a deep V, but tapers to about 10-12 at the rear? I apologize for the fact I am a boat moron!

"The dead rise should be fairly constant and not increase to a deep forefoot at the bow. A deep forefoot can cause spinout on a sharp turn."

This was the part from that article that concerns me. But with inboard jet boats they have a pretty drastic V at the bow and taper off at the transom?

Around here jet pumps get put on many types of hulls, its not always the best application, but you can usually get them to work OK. The bigger question is what is the reason for wanting to put a pump on this hull?

Re: Can I install a Jet foot?

Thank you for your reply. I realize my marine knowledge is less that desirable and I appreciate any and all help.

The main reason is to run the Snake River (not the white water). In most places I would want to go I would be fine with a prop, but I figure having a jet foot would be the safest since it wouldn't hang below the boat hull like my prop. So I guess the simple answer is I would like to be able to safely run in shallower water.

I was contemplating whether or not to just get a big Jon boat with a jet and forget about it, but then I wouldn?t be comfortable in the bigger reservoirs. I almost got swamped by wells on a few occasions in a shallower sided bass boat.

Expect to lose a significant amount of power, I think the normal 30% reduction is optimistic, I think the HP is reduced by more like 40 to 50%.

You should be able to make it work and you may be able to find a used pump, but expect to pay around $2,000 by the time you're done.
