Can I install an electric start?

Hi! I have a 1995 (i think) Evinrude E15REOD (serial # G 03962648) with rope start. I'm wondering if I can convert this to electric start as a winter project. Also, the engine does not seem to want to idle. It runs like a champ with a little bit of throttle but if allowed to idle it dies (regardless of F, N or Rev). This is my first outboard. I'm fairly competent with tools and won't be afraid to tear into it with a little guidance! thanks! Joey P

thanks! from looking at the pricing on the parts it does not seem too economical to do the switch

If you keep watching e-bay or craigslist you may luck out and find a blown donor motor with the parts you need. That's about the only way to make it work without dumping a lot of $$.

Re: Can I install an electric start?

When I bought my '79 evinrude a few years ago (my third motor), the retire navy vet who sold it to me showed me where the motor was already set up to add the electric start components. I looked into it a bit too, but then decided that if I really wanted an electric start, I'd just upgrade to a newer motor with the electric start already in place.

I ran into the same dilemma with my snowmobile and electric start / reverse.
